Was wodering the correct weight oil to use.....i don't have a manual. Also wanted to know if synthetics can be used and if there's as much of a benefit to it as in cars (use it in my pathfinder and it does wonders). Gonna do my first oil change soon, hopefully it was changed by previous owner at 600 mile mark. I only have about 2800 on the odo but i'm going to tune her up and such so i want to do it all while i'm at it. Just wanna know the best thing to put in her.

Since your still low on the ODO hold off on synth until around 10,000 mi. But book says 10-40w API SE or SF make sure it is not Energy Conserving. If you live in a hot climate I would jump up to 20-50w which is what I plan on doing this weekend, (damn trips to tampa, so far Ive put almost 4,500 miles on since beggining of NOV -02) anyway wait for around 10,000 miles to use synth. Oh since your doing a run through I'd suggest putting an inline filter in too. $2 bucks
My first virago 535 came into my hands in 94 with 1000 miles on the clock. I was told it had just had a change at 800. At 1900 miles I put in redline synthetic. It was great. Then at 4K I changed with dino oil. The bike felt worse than it had with the older oil. I go back to synthetic almost immediately and it feels much better, I repeat the experiment a few times till I give up and stay with synthetic. I'd say at 2K miles the bike is broken in and ready for synthetic. By 10K my 89 was using 1/2 a quart in 3K miles and who knows what it would have been like with synthetic at 2K. The bike will continue to break in even with synthetic just slower.

No, it's not. Synthetic is great for commuting in cold climates - cold starts and short runs.
Synthetic is fine right now, no problems at all, and you can extend your drain intervals. If you buy Amsoil from the link on this board, it helps out the GStwin website. Good idea from Jeff to put in a fuel filter. Good luck with the bike!!
