I was out riding last night and my bike started to cut out on me a little bit. It wasn't idling right either. I would stop at a stop light and it would idle around 800 rpm and I usually have it set around 1500. Has anyone else had these problems? I also noticed oil leaking through the air filter which shouldn't be happening either. Does anyone have any ideas thanks. I have a k&n filter, jardine full exhaust, and dyno rejet kit.
Interestingly, there have been a number of posts similar to this regarding the GS500F. I'm experiencing similar problems with mine right now.
- choke does not seem to work - tries to ignite once, then nothing - seems like it's flooded
- can bump start okay, but have to keep revving until it sits at 3000rpm with full choke or it slowly drops rpm until it dies
- at idle with choke on, tach wanders and it idles low, around 900rpm even though when fully warm idle screw is set to 1200rpm
- takes WAY longer to warm up than usual and will often stall when rolling off the throttle when coming to a stop
- once warmed up to fulll temp, seems to run fine and acceleration is not rough or noticeably weak
I've just been through the 24,000km service so my valves are all adjusted within spec, etc. I'm trying to contact another member who had a very similar problem a while back, but didn't post any solution to that thread. I just had my carbs off this weekend and can't find anything wrong or out of whack.
One thing that did come up in more than one thread I investigated was a plugged carb vent hose, in one case by a mud wasp! Theoretically, this might create an airlock in the float bowl and causing the floats not to go all the way up and prevent the needle from stopping the flow of gas. I checked my carb vent hose last night (goes over the top of the aribox and down between the airbox and battery) and pulled air back out through it no problem. I could even hear liquid gurgling sounds, so it seems like it was clear and I didn't see anything come out the end of the pipe that might have been plugging it. The bike sat overnight the night before, so it could have still been flooded this morning when I got the same symptoms I've been having recently with it not starting. However, after bump starting it, it then ran really well today to work and back once it was warmed up, so I'll see tomorrow morning if there is any change.
