Post by: munkeyboy on August 22, 2003, 03:45:49 AM
I am racing a 94 gs 500 in the uk and wondered if any one knows of any cams i can use to help tune the engine. The engine is totaly standard at the mo and i think a good set of cams would be a good start.
Any ideas (cheap options are always welcomed)

Megacycle out in California does regrinds for GS500s. They are pretty good. The price is a reasonable US$250 with your cams as cores.  The problem is that they are rather 20th century and don't have a 'net site/store. So you have to call them, ship them the Cams, and then pay via COD. Not sure how that would work to the UK...

I can send you the specs on the cams I had done.
AND (just thought of this) I still need to send a EX cam in to be fixed (spit a shim that ate up the cam lobe) so will be sending some in anyway..If you are interested in getting your cams done, I can act as an intermidiary.

I'm a shipping supervisor for an international electronics company and I can tell you, right now, C.O.D. is not available for international shipping, personal or business.  Although you might be able to ship something personal through your company, get the discounted bulk rate for businesses, and pay back the company through the 'petty cash' account (accounting speak). Call Megacycle and work it out with them, maybe with a credit card or check?

You can pay with a money order.
They don't even take credit cards yet.
Address;
Megacycle Cams
90 Mitchell Blvd.
San Rafael, CA. 94903
Ph. (415) 472-3195
Fax (415) 472-1497
The woman you'll deal with is Barbara. Very knowledgeable.
She can tell you the total and you can send a money order with the cams. The cams I use cost $271.00.

There are also other things to consider. Like different valve springs> and converting to shim under bucket with high lift cams.
Plus there is some slight mods to do to the head for clearence, or the larger lobes will hit.
This depends on the grind you choose.

Bob, I realize you beat the crap out of your motors but does splitting a shim ever happen to street riding motors.  I ride hard a times and reuse my shims when I adjust valves.

Is it not a good idea to reuse shims?  Is there any correlation with used shims and splitting them?

Thanks,
Paul

Man, I'm sorry.  I think I got distracted by the kids as I was trying to post earlier.

It was JamesG whom I ment to ask that question about the split shim.

I've been working a lot lately and probably should just go to sleep.

Anyway, JamesG same question from my last post.

Thanks,
Paul

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's SPIT not SPLIT.
I've never heard of a shim splitting. But I've heard of them getting spit out of the bucket.
This only seems to be an issue with high lift cams that are beyond a certain amount of lift.
That's why it's suggested to convert to shim under bucket.
Plus the shim is 13mm in diameter, so it's much lighter. And the new reatiners are titanium   8)

Man, I really should take some reading lessons.  Or, start wearing my reading glasses.  :x

It was written SPIT not spLite.  Thanks Bob, that makes a whole lot more sense.

I think I'll go to sleep now for about a month.
