My bike was messing around since the rebuild . and within 10 minutes of searching , it runs perfect again , the choke cable was adjusted all wrong , and i had major fuel stavation , and now by the looks of the hanging revs , im running a little lean , so i gotta pull the carbs again .. I hate it !! :thumb:
Moral is , Searching gets u answers alot faster , and doesnt annoy ppl with the same question over and over and over...
Edit: . according the wiki , im suffering both types of Lean/Rich .
Lean : Hanging Revs , Popping when i close the throttle sometimes
Rich , Dark Plugs .
Instant Throttle Response , The Wiki Says the throttle doesnt Respond IF lean , it has instant power , and no clear flat spots
Smell unburnt fuel ,
Its Rejetted , with a PRedetor Exhaust and Lunchbox , its rejetted per the wiki .
could it be the mixture screws ?
I AM NOT A CARB PERSON! :o
But, yeah, if you are running rich, and re: hanging revs, are you sure that the choke adjustment is correct, i.e.; just enough play that it's not still "on"? Also same with the throttle cable right there near the choke linkage, do you hear a "snap" when you shut the throttle? The throttle linkage at the carbs has a (for god's sake don't expect me to know the correct terminology yet, I know how it works though cause I was just in there! :icon_confused:) metal return unit that the cable pulls up against another metal part, if it smacks closed it has enough play. At least on my 2001, the earlier bikes only have one cable, not the dual system from what I remember...
Also when I rejetted I had my revs go WAAAY up and hang, I just reached in between under the carbs to the big idle adjuster screw (it has a knurled knob to turn by hand and cranked it until they came down, let the bike warm up a bit and took the idle down to about 1300. It still will climb up a couple hundred when it's been running, but stays there and it does not climb.
So yes, I think you and I both need to try the idle adjuster screws on the carbs, but I will fuss with that the next time I have it out.
But if you check all that other first unless you're sure about it, maybe that is something simple that it could be before you pull the carbs.
My plugs have not gotten hot enought to self clean to get an accurate reading, but with a stock exhaust even drilled out I am certainly running a bit rich, with 22.5, 65, 147.5 rejetting with a K&N lunch box because of the stock exhaust. I had thought I would have a can coming but now I am out hunting again. My plugs when I checked them after just about 25-30 minutes mostly around town, not long high sustained revs, were a little sooty around the bottom, not on the insulators or electrodes though. Popping when closing the throttle unless excessive and super loud like big backfires is I think not too serious?? Mine doesn't pop at all.
Now that I've exposed myself as grasping at straws someone will come along and correct me and help you!
Nah , there not big pops , there just little ones when i close the throttle , it did it before when i rejetted the 1996 coz of the lunchbox and the Exhaust
Yea mines a 2001 to ,
Thanks Teek , ill have a looke
ya, seems like they always need a little tweak here or there. last night @ the car wash the right side steamed off water fast, and the left was a good deal slower.
guess that means i'm lean on the R again. yay. more tweaking. weeeeee
i'm rich enough to start with just a quick snap of the throttle, then the starter now. :)
cooler mornings mean choke of course :)
Yea , mine starts on the button , Cant complain bout that! dont even need choke
