Title: Parting out 1991 GS500E - goodbye my love.
Post by: vsboxerboy on April 13, 2008, 11:26:39 AM
I'm really sad to be doing this and it hurt me greatly to have my last ride on my always faithful GS be a 20 mile limp home with a spun bearing due to low oil.  (check your oil!)  She served me well these past two + years even to the bitter end and carried my sorry ass home through the pain.

Anyway, I'm not really sure the best way to go about doing this and I have to look into what parts are worth what, but PM or post up what items you need and we can work something out.

The tank and plastics are red
rear tire is low on tread
the front tire is not
I don't know about the brakes (in terms of how much pad is left but they work great)
carbs have been rejetted and tapped so the mix screws are available and they are FANTASTIC
engine is assumed to have a spun bearing but still runs, starter and such still work
all of the electric components work
chain and sprockets changed ~2000 mi ago
~25000 mi total on bike but gauges show 19000 due to laziness in replacing a snapped speedo cable
everything is in really good condition but let me know what you want pics of.

Sorry the bike is so dirty, I really haven't been riding very much recently but here she is:

The tank is in overall excellent condition with a few little knicks here and there which I tried to photograph the (by far) largest being at the very front right edge which I photographed.  No dents

I'm interested in the carbs, tank, seat, and ignition advancer, maybe a few other items. I have a friend in Ventura who can pick everything up locally, so let me know what you're asking for those items. I realize that Tang asked about the tank first, but if he passes on it, keep me in mind for it next, and thanks.

OK, my friend in Ventura wants to know how much you're asking for the entire motorcycle; he says he will rebuild the engine with his son. Turns out they've been looking for a cheap project bike...

gsnoober, I sent you a PM if you don't get that, let me know because that would be in my best interest.

Additionally, I also believe that the ignition advancer was modified by Bob Broussard which I forgot to mention.

Just replied to your PM; chances are, I can find you a local buyer who will want the entire GS, so please don't sell any parts off it yet. Did you paint the frame? Also, can you post a photo of the gastank near the petc0ck, so we can see the crappocket on that side of the tank? Is the title clear, or is it a salvaged title? What front tire (make and size) is that? How many miles on it? Did you repaint the tank and side panels?

Thanks for the info about the ignition advancer; I'll pass that along to the potential buyers, along with the information about the carbs... the bike looks a little rough, but I'm hoping someone I know will buy it anyway, and get it back on the road. I'll pass your phone number to the three guys I mentioned (in the PM) who might be interested in it, so hopefully, someone will pick it up next weekend, and start wrenching on it.

Good luck with the sale; my friends are all good guys who love motorcycles, and that's a rolling project just waiting for a new home.

When I got the bike it was a little more rusty so I removed all the paint and rust from the frame and then primed and painted it.  The tank and plastics were left untouched externally but the tank was given the full POR15 (if that is the right name I forget as this was 2 years ago) treatment to the inside to remove any rust that was inside.

I'll get that picture for you tomorrow as well as info on the tires, the title is clean although I have no idea where I put that damn paper and might need to go to the DMV to get a new one but I believe in one fell swoop I can apply for the duplicate to come into the buyer's name (have to check on that).

As far as mileage goes, there is about 25000 miles on the chassis, but I don't know about the engine as it is not the original.

Thanks for filling in those extra details; I've spoken to two of the men I mentioned in the last PM I sent you, and I expect to talk to the third one within a few days at the latest, when he goes back to SoCal. Here's hoping one of them will decide to buy it soon; in the meantime, I'll contact a few other guys I know, just in case none of the guys I've already mentioned to you want it. SOMEONE might want something to keep them busy this spring / summer... I don't know if any of the three have ever actually rebuilt an engine before (I don't THINK any of them have), but with time and resources, anything is possible. Keep the faith; you seem really attached to your GS, and I'd hate to see it dismantled and scattered to the ends of the earth...

Oh, I also have a compete engine gasket set (which doesn't include the gasket between the valve cover and head though), a Clymer's manual, and a valve shim tool (the little half wrench looking thing to lift up the cams) to throw in as well.

Not sure what you mean by crappocket but here is the petcock area:

Here is the front tire which is a Bridgestone Battleax BT45f 110/170-17 M/C 54H

Didn't bother to get the specs on the rear tire because as you can see it has seen better days.

Hey guys, sorry about the delays, I was waiting for a buyer of the bike as whole to come this weekend, but as time ticks away, it doesn't seem as if he will be pulling through.  If anyone has a serious offer to make on the bike as a whole, please let me know ASAP via PM preferably with a number at which you can be reached because I want to get this show on the road here.

So far I have interest with -

Tank - Tang
Rear Farings - 89gs500efirstbike
Frame - leedutcher
chrome bars, mirrors, and the[/s] suzuki valve tool - ohgood
wheels - da602krew

Let me get prices and pictures for those items for you

I AM INTERESTED IN THE CARBS IF THEY ARE STOCK!!!!
Title: Re: Parting out 1991 GS500E - goodbye my love.
Post by: vsboxerboy on April 21, 2008, 01:51:33 PM
Carbs are not stock in that they have been rejetted to 127.5/40 (see sig) and those brass plugs have been tapped out in order to gain access to the mixture screws underneath - they are otherwise stock though.  The rejet was based upon recommendations for the drop in K&N filter which is currently on the bike.

Hey guys sorry its been so long since an update, I've been so busy that it's been hard to get things moving along.  My landlady just stopped by and working on cars/bikes on the property is actually prohibited and against the terms of the lease and she wants me to get it out as soon as possible.  If anyone can come and pick up the bike as is I will sell it for very cheap as I need to get this thing out.

The parts already sold are listed above + the rear plastics.  There is intrest int the forks as well if anyone interested wants to continue parting out.  I'm open to any and all serious  offers so don't hesitate to PM me or email me.  Thank you guys all so much!

Hey, sorry for being MIA, but I have been extremely busy.  I really don't have time to continue parting out the bike and need to sell her as is right now, otherwise I will donate her to charity.  If you have any serious offer to make please let me know so as long as you are willing to pick up the bike from santa barabara, CA.  I will not be able to ship or transport the bike - if someone has the time and place to part the bike out, this is already a deal to be had but I am really hoping to find someone that would like to fix her up.

Either way, please do let me know, and to those of you that have asked me for parts, I am sorry that I have been unresponsive at best.

Thanks again for all your help guys
