Title: Front wheel fender melted?
Post by: HUNTER881 on August 22, 2003, 10:55:54 AM
I noticed the other day after a ride that the rear of the front wheel fender has melted! It has massive wrinkles and some bubbles. Is it normal for heat to come off the exhaust pipes so extreame that this is common? I bought my GS500E from a used dealer...is it possible this is an aftermarket part?

melted front fender means its running very lean and hot. Might check the oil and jetting on the bike. Was it like that when you got it?

I think it has something to do with being lean, and having your idle set to high.  This topic has been discussed before in prevoius post.  I should know, cuz mine is melted too.  Do a search for melted fender and you should find it.

Good luck.

best thing you can do is keep and eye on ebay for a replacement.

idle is set around 1200rpm, I have a ignition advance and synthetic blend oil in the engine, guess that means i should check the plugs soon for fouling too

I have a stock 99 and mine melted one night sitting in traffic. Not too bad, but a guy I know has the same bike, stock and his is melted too.
Title: Lean...

Well not really...Lean wont foul plugs. You need to jet yourself out of the lean and hot zone. I'd start with 40 pilots and 3 turns out on mix screw for a starting point, before you seize up the motor. I also dont like to set the idle at 1200...a bit low for my comfort...I set it at 1500+ cos the thing makes no oil pressure...at idle once its warmed up...I mean that literally...no pressure...If you fit a guage to it... it dont move at all... at 1500 it might just about make 2-3 psi...
On a side note I hate carbs...I am trying to get the idle set right on mine...and if I set the 2 screws equal...the right one is lean and the left is rich...I mean very lean and very rich...nowI start turning my mix screw out on the right and in on the left...now the 2 are nearly 2 turns out from each other and there is still room for improvement...The right one is BTW ~5 turns out...I am afraid it will fall off...Oh yea my O2 sensor is nearly useless cos the thing isn't hot enough to make a decent reading and one being rich will throw off the reading anyway. When I come to a stop it shows signs of being rich and lean...It will hover at 3000+ suddenly drop to under 1000 and stall, I blip the throttle to keep it from stalling and it will race back to 3000, and slowly drop to 1200 and stay there for a un determined amount of time and then try to drop to 800 or back to 3000...
Oh ya at any throttle opening its sweet as hell once warmed up. Before warming up it has a few hiccups above 5K (time for another washer under needle you think...)
Cool.
