You can get an idea of how The Buddha can help you by reading this thread:

He can rejet your carbs, or sell you the jets you need to do the work yourself...
And he can alos post snide remarks about not needing a rebuild.
Truth is ... I ahve never rebuilt a single GS carb. Never needed it. I have replaced float bowl O rings (which BTW is the one and only situation you need to buy a kit for) and swapped out several O rings inside ... but a full scale rebuild - no ...
Anyway, I'd do rejet for $45, rebuild for $100 + cost of 2 - kits and a rebuild + rejet for 125 + cost of 2 rebuild kits (rejet labor is free if you do rebuild - cos its all comming apart to minute bits anyway in case of rebuild. So new jets are just the only incremental cost.
What is ailing your carbs ??? and that answer may save you $100+ ... Clean and rejet will solve most issues, leaks are fixable by swapping out the O ring that is shot. And I have seen some carbs - 3 in fact that a rebuild would have done nothing for. 2 had pilot jet fittings broken, 1 had float tower broken (not a GS carb) and one other had a busted air screw fitting. I also have heard of a carb set with a crack down one side on the body.
Cool.

The simple way to tell if you have a complete V&H exhaust system, or only a slip-on, is to look at the header pipes in front of the engine. Do you have two individual pipes running down to the collector, or are the two pipes attached by a cross-pipe? If you see a cross-pipe, that is the STOCK header pipe. If you see two individual pipes NOT connected by a cross-over pipe, you have an aftermarket header, probably also from V&H.
You can see what the stock head pipes look like in this diagram:
http://images.powersportsnetwork.com/fiche/images/Suzuki/1989/Motorcycles/2103_14.gif
Notice the cross-over pipe connecting the two header pipes; that is the STOCK header. Now, you should be able to tell us whether you have a complete system, or only a slip-on.
Thank you to everyone for responding to my question. I do have theV&H aftermarket exhaust and not the slip on. What I ment by rebuilding the carbs (I should have clarified it better) was a kit that provided all of the o-rings and gaskets ect. and not needles ect. The bike sat for a while and the previose owner took it as a trade for home repair. So, Bob as we will call him cleaned the carbs out and added some gas he had was seasoned, then added some fresh gas to the mix. When I start the bike I often have to give it some gas, and it seamed that it did not like to start w/ choke on. When I get it going it takes some time for it to warm up, I have to kep on the throttel and after a while it will idle (low) and eventually irt will stall out. The bike is difficult to get it to turn over, it may be due to the bike not being ran for very long and the new Batt not getting a full charge due to this. There are a few things that I will checkout tomorrow since I shouild get out of work on time, i.e. pull plugs, check w/ meter batt voltage, smell gas to tell if it has went flat. The reason I was aking about the kit is due to plans of taking the carbs off to up grade the jets when I purchase the K&N filter, and I wanted to do everything all at once rather than (if avoidable) haveing to take it apart a second time just after taking apart to clean it. For one thing I live about 25 mins from civilization (back woods of CT) I'd hate to take it apart then have to get in the car to get something that I could have already purchased before I started the repair. My second question is which K&N filter to purchase? The lunck box is cheaper but I lose the air box, is this good or bad, the same goes for the K&N pods, but cost more than the lunchbox, then I could go with the K&N drop ins, I could keep the air box but double the cost for the upgrade. So, what is the best set with my current exhaust and what will be the correct je set up? I would like to clean, adjust, and rejet the carbs this weekend, along with a closer gas tank inspection, I just recieved the Haynes manual from the library on Friday, so now I am ready to get the bike tuned and ready for the road. I start the Basic Motor Course in 2 weeks, and I would like to practice some before I take the final riding exam ( I have to go for a thur and sat then go the following thur and sat.) I thank everyone for their help in figuring this carb situation! -- JIM :)
UPDATE--- today the bat. was fully charged and installed new plugs (smelled like fouled bad gas plugs), I got it started but it acts like it's not getting sufficiant amount of fule , I had to give it a lot of throttle to get it running and even after that it wouldn't stay running, and to keep it running I had to give it a lot of throttel. So, I took the tank off and drained the rest of the bad gas into an old gas can, took the filter out which wasn't to bad. I looked into the tank and it is starting to get bad so I will clean it and treat it. So, this is were I have left off, any sugestions on what I should do next?? I was thinking about taking the carbs off and just checking out their condition, because P.O. stated that he just took them off to clean them. My feling is that he lost or damaged an O - ring and got the carb out of adjustment when he put it back together. How can I tell what main and jets are installed in the carbs? Lastly, can anyone reccomend which K&N filter I should use, either the drop in or the lunch box? If I use the lunch box what do I do for an air box, and what do I re-jet the carb to if I use the drop in, and does one filter set up provide better performence over the other??? -- Thanks in advance, JIm
Can anyone give me some feedback please?? --JIM :)
Try running it with the fuel valve/petcock on PRIme.If that solves the problem try these to links for a fix.
This is a how to eliminate the vacuum part of the petcock and turn PRIme into off.Everything else stays the same.
http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=19363.0
This link describes a near direct replacement that uses no vacuum for operation.Easiest of the 2.The 1st link is a cheap to free mod.

If your petcock has a plastic knob, these links won't work.Sorry.
I have the plastic knobed one so I may just purchase the honda one! However, can anyone answer my other questions regarding the rejetting and which K&N filter to use??Ineed to order these parts soon, so I canstart riding. Briefly, my question what are the advantages of the lunch box over the drop in, is there any downside to removing the air box, and what carb set up would i use for an90' with V&H system with either K&N set up, the web site doesn't reflect my set up. Thanks in advance,-- Desperate JIM :)

With stock exhaust use K&N SU-5589.With an upgrade exhaust K&N RU-29 AKA lunch box.Use this guide to rejet for you application http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/Rejetting I get my jets from Buddha and my air filters from www.amazon.com .Search for the part number stated above.Amazon has the cheapest K&N I can find.
Thanks for the reply! However that link that I have read before still doesn't show a set up for the K&N drop in. I am trying to decide between the drop in and the lunch box, but I have not got any feedback on which set up is better and what are the trade off's with removing the air box from the bike. Thanks for your help. -- JIM :)

Lunch box is the best with an exhaust upgrade.(40 pilots,145 mains,150 mains seem a little rich)Only draw back to a lunch box is a little more growl from the intake of air,and a slight drop in fuel mileage, depending on your riding style. The dropin only needs jets 1 up from stock with a stock exhaust.(40 pilots,127.5 or 130 mains, you can sell jets easy on here)Unless the restrictor is removed from the drop in,then you may need to go up 2 jets on the mains from stock.(130,maybe 132)Most people set the pilot at 40 and leave it.My stock rejet was 40 pilot,127.5 main,1 washer, and 2 and 1/2 turns out on the mixture screw. The mixture and adding washers come with tuning. You can get it real close with the Wiki jetting matrix.I hope this helps.
Rain will not affect a lunch box filter this has been debated and no one has ever had problems. It is tucked up under the tank and between the frame rails.
Thanks for the reply Ben, I greatly appreciate it! :) Since I have the full V&H exhaust should I go with the 150 main if I go with the lunch box?? - Thanks in advance, Jim :)
