well you guys, I have finally decided on what college i will be going to this fall.
and the lucky winner is Pace university in downtown manhattan.
Yes, i know, i am moving from south florida to NYC and its a big change but also a needed and wanted change.
I am definitely bringing the GS up with me but........
where am i going to park it!?!?
anyone familiar with the area or school?

Why, oh why, would you want a GS in downtown Manhattan? I wouldn't take my bike there for a weekend, much less four years. Parking hassles, vandalism (depending on how expensively you park it), traffic hassles, etc. You'd have to ride an hour before you got to RIDING territory. Get a battery tender, leave it in Florida, ride the crap out of it when you're home.
If I lived on Manhattan, I'd be vehicle-less. Public transit is awesome, and it's one less thing to worry about.

I just dont want to be motorcycleless. I can't just leave my baby home alone for long periods of time.
Maybe i will store it outside the city somewhere.

It costs some $$$ to go in and out of Manhattan, tolls everywhere. I dont know if it would be worth it or not. You should check out a NYC motorcycle forum, theres gotta be somehting like that :icon_mrgreen:
i always took the train, parking and riding is impossible. i would not bother taking the bike
I actually live here, and motorcycle ownership is easy as hell. There is alternate side parking where you have to move the bike once or twice a week for street cleaning. Down by pace, there is a big sidewalk island somewhere close to south street seaport where tons of bike park without worry of tickets for free.
You can park in between cars very easily, and if you park between them at meters, you don't get tickets. I would advise that you get a garage for home parking, though.
Public transit here is awesome, and super efficient, but if you are going to own a vehicle, a bike is the easiest way to get around. PM Me when you get here, we should go on some rides. I'll be happy to show you around the neighborhood, the fun rides, and some fun bars, etc.

However, im getting a little worried about the bringing the bike up with me.
I know there are plenty of places to park around the city but what about overnight? :icon_confused:
I will be staying in the dorms at pace.
so far i found a parking garage near by that takes motorcycles but it is 100 bucks per month and i will be a poor college student :cry:

Dude, you would be appalled at some of the shaZam! that goes on in dorms. A motorcycle being stored indoors is the least of worries.

Nah, I'm just playin'. They won't even let you have a coffee pot, they'd probably have a heart attack if I tried to roll my bike into the elevators. Although I do have about a forth of my bike in my room in parts. That would be pretty funny though. I bet if you rolled it in at like 2 in the morning you could get away with it consistantly.
Next year we're getting a house, so I'll probably keep it on our porch, if not in my room. As long as it's on the first floor.
If I were you I'd see if your school has some sort of motorcycle group. I know mine has one and they have a group page on facebook. I'm sure they could provide you with some good parking options.

Sadly, $100 is a great deal for a garage space in the city.
As far as overnight, vandalism is not generally a problem in the city. I would feel comfortable leaving my bike out overnight nearly anywhere in Manhattan. The bigger threat is parking tickets. Just learn the alternate side parking schedule and you should be gravy.
A lot of people park motorcycles on the sidewalk, which is technically illegal, so I don't condone it ;). HYPOTHETICALLY, if you were to do it, you would just remove your plate when you park it and cover the bike, you would be fine.

I work downtown but live in New Jersey. The bike stays in NJ. It's expensive to get it on and off the island, and in New York itself walking and the subway are more efficient/ safe. If you do decide to take the bike to school make sure you'll have a way to take it back home if you find that you can't ride enough to make it practical. If I had to pay to park it wouldn't make sense for me.
