Title: Help a newbee out - Need to know the tranny gear ratio for 89 gs500e
Post by: posracing57 on April 17, 2008, 06:34:45 PM
I need a little help. I need to know the gear ratio for the 89 gs 500. My situation is that I am mini-sprint racer and have installed the
gs in my car. I have not received the repair manual yet.

I think this is what you meant...

(From Clymer 1989-2002; Chapter 7, Table 1)

Gear Ratio

1st   2.461   (32/13)
2nd   1.777   (32/18)
3rd   1.380   (29/21)
4th   1.125   (27/24)
5th   0.961   (25/26)
6th   0.851   (23/27)

He said "mini-sprint" so maybe it's a go-kart?

edit: whatever it is, we'd love a picture!  :thumb:

Thanks, BeRto.   That is the very thing I needed. I'm not handy on the computer but will try to put in a pic. I belong to a club of older
racers that still love to race but don't like to spend big bucks doing it. Our class is limited to the old yamaha 400, or a 600 older than 94.
I came acrossed a guy that had the 89gs sitting in old garage, shot an offer and bingo. I needed gear ratio to set my rear gearing on
rear axle comp to what it was to the yamaha. We run on a 1/6 mile dirt oval, turn speeds of 50 mph.

Yeah, if you could I'd love to see a pic.

With alot of help we did it. This pic is with the 400 yamaha on it. I did get the gs fired up in it last night. The gs has a lot more torque
to it than the old motor had.
