Title: choke
Post by: Ash on April 23, 2008, 06:11:27 AM
Hey guys, I have had my 2001 GS500E for three years now but I live in New York so I don't get to ride as much as I want . I am wondering if it is normal for the bike to be "cold blooded". I started it up and need to use the choke but it doesn't like to have the choke  turned all the way off for fifteen minutes or so. the first year it seemed that this only happened when it was really cold out. This year I have been riding in beautiful weather so far (sixty and seventy degrees). Also if I am riding it with the choke still on it tends to pop which sounds like a backfire and cut out when I first get on it. Has any one else had this problem? Is there a simple adjustment that could be done to the carburetor, does the carb. need to be cleaned? Thanks, and happy riding!

You shouldnt ride with the choke on at all really. Your carbs most likely need cleaned  :thumb:

the choke is never on all the way when I ride just enough to keep the bike going. I will look into getting it cleaned. Any idea how time consuming or difficult that may be? Thanks

I also live in NY and got a 2001 gs500 but somewhy my bike doesn't need choke at all. Maybe just to start it but after a min of running I can just turn it off and the bike is fine. I don't know if that is normal or what. Maybe previous owner rejeted it.

do you know what jets are supposed to be in the bike? Or where the bike is most comfortable jetting wise? Thanks

Ok if you ride with the choke on it can mess things up? I really dont want to wait the bike out while it warms up to ride. But it may be why i needed a new jet kit. Mechanic told me that they were gunked up with fuel

Yep.Clean them carbs and do a small rejet. The popping is usually a sign of a lean condition. If the carbs are dirty it will cause a lean condition if the passages are partialy blocked.

start it at full choke and once started play with the choke as it warms up...it will need less and less.  then it will  be warm and ready to ride
