Title: Will a '04 F engine fit on '99 E ?
Post by: nikux on April 23, 2008, 04:11:14 PM
Will a 04 engine (GS500F) fit on a 99 model bike (GS500E)?

I see on the wiki that these things have changed from 99-04 that concerns the engine.

Ignition rotor changed.
Electric tachometer replaces the mechanical unit.
Carburetor changed to a three-jet design.
Exhaust midpipe diameter changed (from approximately 1.75 inches to approximately 2 inches.)

will these changes cause a problem in the replacement?

Swap the ignition out from your 99' motor.

And buy a 01+ electric tach(and wire it up obviously)

Done!(less the hard part of swapping everything)

Make sure the F engine comes with the oil cooler.

There's a plug where the tach drive is for the electric tach.Check and adjust the valves while the engine is out and see if the cam has the gear for the mechanical tach.If so pull the plug and use your tach. Not 100% this will work, but it could save the cost of a new tach.

hmm, a new tach is $180 brand new, i'd have to live without a  tach than pay $180 :( , let me see if the mechanical one can be put in.

for the oil cooler, what if I dont use it, whats the harm? I dont have any fairings so the heat will be same as my old engine right?

will replace the ignition rotor, just to confirm its #4 in this figure right? Isnt it better to keep it from the 04 motor?

you have the option for a direct bolt on plug-n-play oil cooler.  oil coolers are never a bad thing.  if you have one that works at your finger tips, you should always use it.

Mechanical tach can not work with an F engine.  Just buy a universal tach from oldbikebarn or something if you must have one...or buy an entire car kit for a GS500F and get the wiring, gauges, motor and all for it.

You need to swap from the 99', #4 and #3. You will able to tell the difference right away when you see them.
