Title: More laptop stuff...
Post by: makenzie71 on April 24, 2008, 07:03:43 PM
Another laptop...moving on to another project...

This one got screwed up when I downloaded a divx-to-dvd converter.  Shittles.  Now it's slow as shaZam! and it bogs when surfing the internet...with firefox it'll just freeze for like 30 seconds and then work for 30 seconds...freeze, work, freeze, work.  It is also trying it's damnedest to start up IE and keep that running.  Amongst other problems.

I run ad-aware on it with no luck getting it fixed.  I'm probably not doing something right, though, because people out there swear by adaware.

I'm also running CA-antivirus...even the cheap yahoo toolbar ca thing catches more than adaware does...but it's not fixing it either.

Other free suggestions?  Must be free.  I fI got to pay $80 for something I'll just take it and have it formatted and start over.

I completely agree with that. On my home pc I used to download all those programs and that thing runs like molasses now. My laptop I've kept clean and I've had no problems.

I have all that stuff on my desktop and it runs great.  The only reason my laptop is fubar is because I downloaded that divx converter and avg didn't see the bug tied to it.

I've used some divx software, I'll check and see if the converter is installed. Hopefully it isn't

the converter I dl'ed is dvd flick. It works fantastically, but I would trade the ease and quality of that program for one that didn't come with a virus.

scott I'm going to download stuff...but that's why I have things that should see and stop bugs.  If I didn't download anything there wouldn't be any point in having that machine at all.

You always have to look at PC problems like:

(Stupid ->IN) = Stupid <- Out

Cant blame a PC/OS you fill w/ "free-ware"

scott I don't recall pointing blame.  thanks.

bucks, if you're pc isn't already fuxored I wouldn't worry about it.  DVD-flick is an excellent program, I just happened to get it at a bad time and I didn't get it from the most reputable site.

Cool, I haven't had any problems. But I'll definitely keep an eye out for any symptoms.

Good luck on getting your situation cleared up.
