okay so I have a 1990 gs500 and it ran great last fall, I had the seat gaskets replaced and now it will start and runs fine if left at idle for a couple minutes but then it boggs down and dies. when it dies it wont restart until it has sit for a little while. any ideas as to things I can check or any help is greatly appreciated.
What is seats gaskets ??
Cool.
Buddha.
Sounds like one of the petcocks(fuel valves) aren't turned on right or the diaphram is bad in the frame mounted petcock. The petcock mounted on the tank should have the slot running up and down.Try the frame mounted pecock on PRI(PRIme). If it runs see these links for a fix.

Are you using starter fluid to get it started? If so, It will run until the starter fluid is gone and die out.
first the seat gasket is inside the carb you know needle and seat, I checked the main diaphrams and there good, I will check out the petcock diaphram and get back to you. Anyone know where the adjustment is for the fuel air mixture, I kinda think it is set wrong I think it might be running to rich and thats bogging it down and killing it in combination with the stable thats still in the fuel, I just put new plugs in and already there was a little black gunk so I am not sure if that supports that idea or not. Thanks all.

Drain the old gas and the float bowls on the carbs. The mixture screws are located on the bottom of the carbs. There maybe brass plugs covering them. They have to be drilled out.
the bike is nearly out of gas now I think I will try to drain the bowls a bit and try running some premium. I just tried the diaphram, I switched to prime, I got a little air in the lines just before the filter, but it ran good at idle for about 10 minutes, then I tried to give it some gas and it was ok at first and then it started bogging down a little, but it didn't die right away it backfired a couple times and then it died. So could that be the dang stable or is there something else going on??
Prolly the stabil.I'd try a few high revving trips around the block first.
okay so after that last post I drained the rest of the tank and the lines and then filled the tank with premium and ran it for about 15 minutes and it ran great so I took it for a ride first around the block then around town, then town again all great, so I went for the highway and the first 15 miles were fine and then it started dying but each time it would dye I pulled over squeezed the fuel line a few times until I felt a little pressure and then off I went that worked for about another 10 miles, I had to do that about every .8 miles and then for the next 5 miles it would dye and not restart for about 5 minutes and when I got 2 miles from home it the battery had no more juice and it wouldn't start so I had to get the truck and haul it home.
So any more ideas what it could be?? Could it still be the fuel?? What else could it be?? Is it worth the suzuki shops prices to have them look at it??
I am so pissed now, I was so excited on the first part of the ride I thought I had my bike back, but I guess I wasn't meant to ride today. Why can't this dang bike be as easy as my truck to work on? anyways enough of the rant.
Thanks all.
When it died did you try to run it on PRIme?The alternator/generator doesn't start charging until the engine is between 3000 and 3500 rpm.The frame mounted vacuum operated petcock could have a faulty vacuum diaphram.I posted the links to fix this at the beginning of this thread.See those. Also, some people have reported having the same problem when the vent in the fuel cap is clogged.Remove the cap from the bike before taking it apart. It's easier than fishing for small screws in the tank.
+1000 on the PRIme issue. When I first bought my bike, it did the same thing. Run, die. Run, die. Dead.
Turn the frame petcock on PRI and tell us what happens.
all of that occured on PRI i am pretty sure I ruined the diaphram inside the fuel petcock.

make sure your tank petcock is fulling vertical. fill the tank completely, check your over flow line from the carbs so that it can drain proper.
you can always run a temporary line directly from the tank to the carbs for a test.
putting premium in a gs is a complete waste of your money. or your car. or your boat. airplane. battleship. whatever. :)
Oh yea, you should always try random things and go for long rides and start squuezing the fuel lines and post about it and ask us to fix it.
Yea ... you try peanut butter ... that supposedly the best.
Cool.
