Title: Anyone want some stock headers to experiment with?
Post by: BassHz on April 26, 2008, 08:23:10 PM
I've got a complete stock exhaust system from a 2000 GS500E.  The thread below explains why I replaced it.  The tail pipe has been removed from the can and it sounds loud and raspie.

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=38645.msg433849#msg433849

I found a complete, unmodified system on eBay and it has fixed my performance problems.  If the can had sounded better, I would have tried harder to tune it and rejet to fix those problems but it ends up that I'm very happy with the sound of the stock system.

The pipes are painted silver and do have some gravel pitting and surface rust on the bottom.  They are straight with no dents or scratches.  With a little cleaning and black hi-temp grill paint, they would look really sweet.  The can looks really good too, especially with the tailpipe removed.  I could ship with or without the can.  Let me know where you want the cut.

Here are some photos:

I was thinking $25 plus shipping.  With some creative packaging, UPS would cost about $20 for the whole thing.

...or make an offer?

UPS for just the headers would be less.

OK I'll take it for the $$ of shipping ... but you have to slice the can ... make sure you dont cut the header that is inside the V part of the can.
Cool.

These are from a 2000 GS500e, will they work on a 2004?  I thought the pipe diameter was different.

I recently saw someone on eBay offering to convert stock gs500 headers to be compatible with typical slip-on cans but I haven't been able to find the link again.  It was welded midpipe with the pipe diameter increase at the can end.  They would also repaint the whole thing.

I'm going to wait a while longer to see if anyone is interested in "buying" the system.

Headers to take a slip on ... AKA a slipper pipe with flare ... I'll do it ... $10 to $20. Less if I got some crap lying around.
However I need a set of headers (I dont have an intact set of any headers anymore)  AND the exhaust can I need it to slip on to. You have to ahve the brackets to hang it also in place.
I have a couple exhausts I could fit to and you can buy the exhaust and slipper and ofcourse get your header back.
Cool.

I am just looking for something to put on my bike 'for now'.

I previously had a wileyco and flange but the PVC spacer I made cracked, which caused free play in the boly, which caused it to back out, which caused it to fall off in the middle of the highway.  By time i got home and came back with my car to get it, it was gone.

I have no exhaust no and my neighbors have a new baby, so I'm trying to be somewhat considerate and put something on it for now.

The final plan is to build one; cut-off the pipes right after they turn under the body then running them straight back undernearth (through a homemade mufferler) and have each pipe flair out right behind the rear set.

So, in short, if it doesn't fit nevermind.

Thanks!

Wileyco and flange ... PVC spacer ... gaaaaaa ... why did you have to use a PVC spacer ?
There is usually 1-2 ways to mod the headers to fit my flange if the wileyco hits stuff, and none of those involve a pvc spacer. You have a pic ?
Cool.

why a PVC spacer?  Cause it was what i had around the house.

I figured it would be fine as it was just providing some place between the mount int he rear pegs and the exhaust.  I think if i hadn't torqued the bolt as much It wouldn't have eventually cracked the spacer.

What should I have used instead?

No I don't have any pics.  It looked good though.

AHA! That's it.  Thanks, bucks.

Now I'm thinking about keeping this thing and doing my own experiment.

Buddha:
Does your modification work like this Yosh slip-on?
http://www.yoshimura-rd.com/ps-3260-1153-trs-stainlessstainless-slip-on.aspx

Since I would have to ship my headers and slip-on can in order to fit your midpipe, would it work for you to send the flared slipper pipe and I could have a muffler shop do the fitting?  Do you weld the midpipe in place or use springs? What slip-ons do you recommend with your slipper pipe?  What's the down side of a slip-on vs. a bolt-on?

Regarding Whatever's situation, do you know if my 2000 headers will fit his 2004 exhaust manifold?

Whatever6060:  I sympathize with your problem.  My can is anything but quiet which is why I replaced it.  As it sits, it would work better as a poor man's race pipe for track day if you're already rejetted.  I don't know how long it takes to remove the headers on an '04 but it takes literally minutes to swap exhaust systems on a naked GS (once the pipes have cooled off).

I would pretty much say any damn pipe can be fitted on the GS ... almost ... the BS is really going to hit the fan when they Can is fitted with funky ass springs (like this one) or some other weirdo BS instead of muffler clamps and bolts. I have a interesting can I should show ya a pic of. Cheaper and more interesting than this tri-oval if you ask me.
Now the advantage is, I can fit it and send you the bits I made to fit it, and you simply put it on. Gimme a day or 2.
Cool.
