I recently took my air filter out to clean it, I smells like gas doesn't that mean I'm running rich? If so how do I fix that? Also are their any benefits besides not having to clean it of a K&N air filter like better MPG? My bike is totally stock and at this point I don't want to rejet and I do not want to spend the money at all on a exhaust I think thats a waste of money. Is it worth spending the 50$ on a K&N?

i guess it really depends on the person personally i love my k&n... just becase of the growl at WOT.... just my 2 cent
Yeah, it's going to smell like gas, it's in the airbox that's part of the vapor recovery system, and the carbs are right there. The K&Ns do need to be cleaned, they have a special cleaner for them.
I finally got a K&N lunch box and did the rejet, and you don't have to have a high flow exhaust, you can drill the stocker if necessary, but you DO need to rejet with more air coming through the filter. It's well worth it, the response of the bike is SO much better! It's like I have a different bike. And I like that growl too from the lunch box, it sounds better. I got a used Yosh can anyway, I want the sound and the look.
You could purchase a K&N (part number SU-5589)drop in filter. It doesn't require a rejet unless you remove the restrictor. How ever the GS is jetted lean from the factory. Here's a link to help you out. http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/AirFilter
