Title: Newbie in OHIO with a little fixer-upper
Post by: theUBS on April 30, 2008, 02:55:28 PM
I just bought a 2000 GS500E. Yesterday was the first it's ran since last season. I wanted to put some fresh fuel in it, but I found the tank to be almost full. I don't think any winterization was done at all. Anyway, I found the throttle response to be VERY muted unless the bike was partially choked. Also, the unchoked idle was a little low (sub 1K). Dry gas? A bottle of carb cleaner? Or attempt to adjust the idle?  Do fuel additives have any adverse effects on these motors?

(According to the previous owner, the oil was changed, the plugs were changed, and the carbs were serviced last season when he bought the bike.)

Looking forward to enjoying my GS like the rest of you!  Thanks!

I had to google map it, but now I can see where it is. I'm just down the road in Columbus. Like scott said post your question up in the general gs500 section and you will get a lot more help.

Most WOULD have to google it!  A basic copy-and-paste is in the general section under "Poor throttle response."  Thanks.

so when we gonna pick a spot to meet for a ride...  I think columbus is a bit too far for me.  Just north of Akron here...maybe somewhere in the middle?

Once I get my bike put back together!  It currently has no wheels, no forks, no swingarm, etc. Hopefully I'll have it back together this weekend. I'm in Cincinnati at school now, but I'll be home early June. I know there are some other Ohio people out there, we should organize a ride.

I'm up for it for sure.  Have yet to ride any fun roads this season.  Just back n forth to work (6 miles round trip)

That's better than me! I've yet to ride at all...

Oh wait scratch that, I did go out for a short ride to test some of workmanship one weekend. Luckily I made it back alive.  :)

Before I commit to doing any serious riding, I'm going to get some practice in--perhaps off road--not on the GS.  The GS I bought is actually my second bike ever...in the last month...  I killed my ex500 before I burned through the first tank of gas!   :icon_lol:  BUT, yes, there are some great riding roads in these parts!  I've at least enjoyed them at length in my car.  :icon_lol:

Oh definitely, there are some great roads down south too, Hocking Hills area. I'd love to know what you did to destroy your ninja!

Let's just say if it were on video, I'd be a Youtube sensation.  Screwed up an uphill start (too much gas before I found the friction zone), backed off the throttle quickly causing me to shift my weight forward--and subsequently BACK onto the throttle.  I was off the road and up a tree before blinking.  Broken front rim, broken upper fairing, bent forks, and a couple of broken lights (at least!).  Me?  SEVERELY wounded pride, but thankfully that's all. =]  At least I was in condition to laugh at myself.  I had to look asinine...

Almost there. I just need to get some welding done, trying to get that finished today. And I have to bleed the brakes. Should be done after that! (knock on wood)

Well usps dropped the ball and so I didn't get a part I ordered today. Which means no bleeding of the brakes. And my welder is out of the shop until Tuesday. Needless to say, things aren't really coming together for me... Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can get her back together.  :icon_rolleyes:

I've been to the quaker steak bike night at Polaris, ours got pretty lame. Jackass blows that out of the water imo.
