Title: extreme drilled exhaust...
Post by: oramac on May 01, 2008, 08:45:18 PM
So, many of you have seen this picture of my drilled exhaust:

Well, I took that a step further.  After researching a 2002 Intruder Volusia, I found that many of those riders 'drill' their stock exhausts.  I also found a few people that had 'removed their baffles'.  This intrigued me, because I know my father in law's bike doesn't have removeable baffles.  It turns out that they used hole saws to drill out the back of the baffle, much like I'd done above, but then they'd go a step further and insert a 1 1/2" dowel into the remaining baffle (the little tube above), and wiggle it around until the interior welds broke loose, then they removed that inner tube.  Check out a video of this procedure here. (http://homepage.mac.com/lydanynom/iMovieTheater5.html)

I had to try it out, and it worked.  It's marginally louder than it was before, but it looks much better.  I'll post up pics when I get a chance.

I did the rejet back when I drilled the exhaust and added a UNI drop in air filter.

Before (http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=GS500e++Exhaust+Baffles&sitesearch=) I removed the baffles as shown above.

After (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3923904961960420390&q=GS500e++Exhaust) I removed the baffles.

Sounds pretty good. Just so you know, both links are for the same 'after' video.

Hey Oramac...got any more pics  of the drilling process. I've got a 2004 gs500f w/stock pipe and trying to get a little more sound without rejetting. Looks like it was tough to drill....

Thx m8

I cut off the inside nipple pipe on the rear of the muffler by about 1 1/2 inches.I did it for looks. It looks more like a custom muffler without that moped nipple hanging out the back.It made a sound change to the muffler without drilling however. It has a good growl at idle till about 2500 rpm.And on good acceleration...not very ratty sounding though!
I had rejetted back in the winter, but I doubt that you would have to rejet from stock.

I did this to my VTX 1300, it is freaking loud now! My neighbors hate when I fire it up but it does sound sweet on the highway. Oh well looks like some cobra pipes down the line and stick to the GS for work, the neighbors would lynch me if I fired it up at 5:30 in the AM on Monday!
