Title: Running strangely
Post by: pjm204 on May 01, 2008, 09:23:06 PM
So recently I put a full supertrapp exhaust on my 2001 GS. I used 6 discs which is in the range the manual says does not need a rejet. I went to take it for a short ride and it was idling a little low so I turned the idle screw and turning it in either direction did nothing to the idle. I thought this was strange but the bike ran fine aside from that so I rode it a few miles. I then noticed that when I released the throttle it would hang at that rpm for a second or two and then come down slowly, and then idle kind of high.

I figure I need to rejet...I have the jets and a lunchbox. Should this take care of it? Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks

your idle screw may not be contacting the throttle, so it -can't- change the idle when you adjust the screw.

slow to return to idle usually means an air leak, aka, lean mixture.

thank you, so what are the fixes for these two conditions? should I go ahead with the jetting and filter and see if that fixes the slow to return condition? As for the idle not contacting the throttle, how do I fix that? WHat is a standard setting for the idle, not in rpms but in turns in or out?

Keep turning the screw until you notice a change in idle speed.

Make sure you're turning the right screw (it is a large brass screw that hangs down between the carbs and is turned by hand). If you're not sure, search for forum for pictures posted by Kerry.

As far as I know, there is no "standard" setting for the idle screw. It is more useful to specify idle in term of rpm than turns in/out.

Good luck!

can I damage anything if I turn it too far in or out? Because I was seriously noticing no change in idle with many revolutions in

If it bottoms out, don't force it. Otherwise, I can't see how turning the idle screw would damage anything.

It seems strange that turning the idle screw would have no effect (unless someone before you backed it out all the way?). Are you sure you're turning the right screw? There's a second little screw between the carbs that affects carb balance; this is the wrong screw to turn.

Try and see if the threads on the screw are damaged, or if there is some other problem. If you'd like some help/comments, post a picture.

Well, it may fall out if you turn it out too far. If you turn it in, it will only raise the idle once it touches the throttle linkage. No, you won't damage anything.

You can visibly check that it's making contact with the tank removed, and see just how everything works.

Since we don't have any pictures of your carbs, let's assume we're talking about the BIG BRASS THUMB SCREW, and that no one as installed a large thumb screw for your mixture screws, which would be not what you want to fiddle with right now. :)

+1 berto, you're a quick typer ! :D

thanks....I am going out to the garage right now to work on it...I'm going to get the idle right first....as well as install a set of case guards. When I get the idle right, then I will install the jets and filter...time permitting.
