Title: stripped oil pan bolt?
Post by: Kaizer on May 04, 2008, 08:14:08 PM
Bad news. I have been leaking oil from the bolt. It could be stripped or the pan could be. Not sure. My friend I think overtightened it when we changed the oil. Now I am losing oil from it and it won't stop. Should I use RTB ultrablack or ultracopper, see if it will seal the bolt, or what should I do? IT won't tighten. It just keeps spinning and when I ride, it loosens up. Damn it! Just one damn thing after another. Also, what could cause oil to leak around the edges of the top of the engine the part that is right next to the pipes and top of the engine right below the tank? Thanks.

Could be valve cover gasket leaking from up top, or the crank case breather thingy?

Autopart stores sell these expanding rubber oil pan plug kits, where with a tool a rubber plug is pushed into your oil pan bolt location, the tip expands slightly once in there creating a tight fit. You then use the plastic tool to remove it when needed.

I've used these on a couple dirtbikes with great results.

Valve cover gasket on top and use an O-ring on the oil drain bolt.Don't over tighten it next time.

Ok, so here is the deal. the bolt is PERFECT. the oil pan is stripped. so...we called this place that redrills the pans for 30 bucks. problem is, you must order an oil seal gasket and install it. no time. so...the plan is, put the silicone puty on the bolt, and let it sit for 24 hrs. my friend said it works great. but next time for oil change, take it in, get it redrilled and refitted. what do you think? where can i get the oil pan plug? walmart?

Sealants will block the oil passages and cause severe engine damage.

It's your bike, but you'll regret not fixing it properly if that bolt falls out while riding.  :dunno_white:

If you have a fairing that covers the bottom of your bike, like I do,you will not know if the bolt falls out until the engine grenades.

take the pan off and get some one to put a heli-coil in it for you then it is a permanent repair

what are you guys talking about? how would the sealant damage the damn engine? it is going ON the bolt not inside the engine. I dont understand. and on top of that, I check my bike from head to toe daily so I know if something is missing or not. the bolt is not so loose that it will come out. with the silicone stuff, it should stay put. plus, it will hold me until I get my replacement pan and fit it.

The sealant will squish up thru the threads and get into the oil.

Silicon is something a guy with a mullet uses on his 1984 350 chevy truck.  Do it right and get a helicoil, if not then its your bike not mine have fun.  the problem with silicon is that it is soft and rubbery.  it can peal from the threads and float around into the motor.  the passage ways inside the motors are really tight.  your motor will have oil on the pan threads so the sealant will never stick.

IF anything i would wrap the bolt with telfon tape on the threads and drip a little red locktight onto it to keep it in place until you get some money to helicoil it.  This is only if i didn't care about the bike and whether it gets damaged or not

okay, so here's the deal. I am getting a new pan ordered and put it. what is a heli-coil? I thought the way to deal with it was to take the pan off, take it to a shop and have it re-drilled and put a new bigger bolt in it. As for silicone, damn. doesn't the oil filter CATCH the excess silicone? wtf? doesn't that stuff harden and not dissolve or fall out? explain. I hate to make a mistake. On top of that, I need the bike asap so the siilicone was recommended to me. explain. thanks.

Dude ... buy import babe's pan put a new gasket on it and fit it. Worry about your oil pan later.
BTW helicoil is not the right repair for your problem. You're better off drilling it to take maybe a 1/2 inch pipe thread. Either way, pan has to come off and get tapped, just buy the right item and worry about this later.
She is really going to ship it the instant you send her the $$ ... maybe she should be called instant-babe  O0 ... I paid last night and she said she was going to mail it in a few mins.
Cool.

Seems to me that the easiest thing to do is buy a used one from a breakers then fit it with a new OEM gasket, no need to waste time and mess around with helicols and sealant then........or am I just thinking too hard?

okay, maybe i am not understood, what i need is a temporary fix, something to get me through to the next oil change. I had a gasket leak a year ago, so the seal is new. can i reuse it instead of buying a new one? plus importbabe has a USED one and not sure if hers fits my model. do all the oil pans fit all the gstwins? for now, I got some thermal tape, had that wrapped around the bolt and a couple of o rings. will that hold or not?

All the pans should be the same.Dunno bout the tape deal.I wouldn't trust it.

oil cooler bikes have a different part number for the pans.

think of a small radiator but instead of coolant its filled with oil. Your bike does not have it. I just checked and all oil pan part numbers are the same for all of the non oil cooler bikes (this means yes my oil pan is what you need).

it has been shipped by the way. Expect it in 3 days.

PTFE tape is not a good idea, for the same reason its not used on hydraulic fittings. It does not break down in oil and if a piece was to come off internally and clog something up..............need I go on?

no worries. i will be patient and wait for importabe's oil pan to arrive. she will just sit there with a rag and covered in plastic til i get the parts to replace the entire oil pan. take care.

I actually wouldn't worry about the silicone or the PTFE tape getting in the engine as much as I would worry that you start leaking oil and it makes it to your rear tire. :icon_lol:

LOL/ funny you mention that.  i lost about half a quart on the way home probably. not sure how i avoided getting it on my tire. but yes, the nice little puddle in the parking lot had to be disposed of very carefully and lots and lots of sand. sigh.

I once had a virago that was leaking oil, somehow it didn't get oil when riding at speed, and I got cocky, one time I slowed for a stop sign, and for 3-4 car lengths I was going walking speed, and then I had to make a left at the light ... and the freaking 1100 motor induced the mother of all lowsides, I catch it ... by shutting the throttle (yea stupid) and nearly end up highsiding it, clean into a down hill ravine and a 10 foot barbed wire fence.
Cool.
