Title: Mechanics in Oz
Post by: 08GSSteve on May 08, 2008, 08:33:33 PM
G'day all

Just interested to what other states are paying for mechanics and maybe also post dodgy mechanics for us to avoid.  Post up the Good, The Bad and The Ugly.  Dodgy Mechanics deserve to be named and shamed and good mechanics deserve to be praised

Picked up my new 08GS from Mcculloch suzuki in Vic Park last thursday and asked what my first 1000km service would be.  Was quoted $140 which I thougt was fair enough.  Rang up to book my service in on the 21st of this month and aksed for a quote and was told $160.  Asked why the price jump and was told they just put prices up to $100/hour (yea well  :flipoff:)

My regular mechanic, Ross and Vic at Motorcycle Electrics Osborne Park went from $55/hour to $80/hour over night but he is still cheaper than a dealer.  Ross and Vic are top class and have been using them in Perth now for years.

What are the rest of you paying to maybe save some of us a buck or 2

NOTE:  Please do not Defame or abuse any mechanics to stay in guidelines of the forums just mention who is good  :thumb: and who is bad or needs improving.

You were severely under quoted! (or i was severely OVER CHARGED!!) My first service 1000kms was $310 (Sydney dealer). Apparently the Valve Haed Clearence has to be checked as part of the on going warranty agreement, when i found this was every 6000kms i told em to stick the warranty and i do it myself now!

Im looking for a mech to do a full service, was given GT MOTORCYCLE & AUTO MOTIVE SERVICES in Wentworth falls anyone know of them?

For that money you can buy every tool you will need to do the service yourself - including a professional mechanic quality deflecting beam type torque wrench.  Then everytime after that you're ahead.

I did the maths of how much the dealer wanted for a service and totalled up the cost of the tools I would need, and came to that exact conclusion.  I now do all the services myself and not only have I saved a bundle of cash, but I also have profited a huge amount of knowledge into the bargain.  :thumb:

Yep you got had for sure.

Which dealer?

ring some other dealers and get quotes then go back to the dealer and stick it to them.

I'm pretty new to this - only had my GS since December. I took it in for a Rego check, new rear tyre, a full water test on the front tyre because it has been going flat, a 40 point safety check plus a loan bike for tha day and it cost $380. I thought that was pretty good since the tyre alone cost $130. That was at Procycles Hornsby.

Just remember to shop round for prices as from dealer to dealer the price WILL change.  EG:  going rate in Perth/hr is anywhere from $80 to $120.

If you take your bike to a dealer for a service etc you should pay NOTHING for a loan bike.  If they are charging you for a loaner then change dealers.  My dealer has a nice collection of SV650's as loan bikes and when you have a nice SV for the day they can take as long as they want to fix your bike.

Same here, around 300$ for the initial service which i booked for tomorrow (The bike has around 700kms on it...) I think it's fair enough if they are going to open the engine and check valve clearance and change oil/filter... so basically i think if they do it by the book, it's fair to charge this much for it ...
