Title: The forgotten suzuki twin.
Post by: qwertydude on May 09, 2008, 11:59:34 PM
This just popped up on craigslist near me. Didn't know suzuki made another vertical twin standard that long ago.

Here's a little info on this long lost ancestor to our much beloved gs500.

Some people install GS head on that engine and stick it in the GS.  :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:

Yamahon ... GS head is overrated, the GR has a smaller (albeit slightly) chamber and slightly larger valves. Making pipes is easier than swapping heads too. I got pipes going to the inside and will make a slipper pipe and have them run close to each other.
BTW I have 2 forks and 3 wheels for that GR. I also have 1 rack of carbs and several other nic nac's.
Cool.

IF  I ever get to it... I have the parts for a GSXR head conversion for the GR motor. Need to work out converting it to a 6-speed from a 5-speed tranny. Maybe be a simple as having a new drum made.

There is a guy in charlotte who has bored (6-7mm I think ) and stroked (5mm if I remember) it to a 851 cc - this I am sure about and he is running a 2 valve head with mega sized valves etc etc ...
He thought the stock 650 isn't going to do much really for me. Anyway, I await your results D, Its going to be definetly worth the trip down to see it ...  :thumb:

I will be staying with a stock bore since I have a pair of 77mm 4-valve FJ1200 pistons that fit perfectly, just need rings. The oil supply to the head is my main concern. I have contacts that can make a new shift drum, hopefully they will not burn me too bad on cost.

A stock GR650 puts out 50hp. I am guessing this combo would be at least in the 70-80hp range.

Need to finish assembling the 569 first.

Aaaah you're going the other way. The less is more if its useable ... you may turn out to have the best of both, reliability and power.
BTW a GS rear wheel (OK never mind you have banana off the RGV right and GSXR wheel ) is going to cry if you dropped 75hp on it.
Cool.

Yea yea yea ... you know how easy it is to break the rear tar free in the 750 ... especially the short stroke 750 kat.
Anyway I have the 4.5 inch one.
Cool.

I saw one of those on craigslist not long before I actually bought my GS.  Oddly enough, I found the same guys website that you did.  I actually followed the link to his homepage and sent him an email to ask questions about the bike.  ...he seemed like a nice guy.  ANYWAY, I ended up deciding I wanted something a little more modern.

What ... you need glasses Yamahon ??? 750 kats outrun their tires ... especially the ones (90-97 I wanna say) that made no power till 9K and then suddenly exploded ...
A skinny tire with too much power on tap also eats the tire, like if you had a 170 it may run 5K, put a 130 in there and it will crap out at 2500 miles. One more reason you dont use a katana 750 as a yardstick.
Cool.
