Title: A rain storm killed my bike
Post by: wheels on May 10, 2008, 02:29:16 PM
A few days ago there was a torrential downpour that lasted a few minutes.  Before the rain my bike worked fine but now it has major problems.

After doing some searching I discovered that the overflow drain from the gas cap area was connected to the carb air intake so it looks like I got a fair amount of water in my carbs.

Before I realized that I had this problem I started my bike up and was running it for a few minutes.  It was really struggling.  (Probably because of all of the water in the carbs)  After about 15 seconds of running I noticed gasoline pouring out of my air filters.  (I'm guessing that this was a result of the water blocking the breather hose ( http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=33835.20 )

Once I realized that I was spewing gas I stopped the engine immediately and the gas appeared to stop.  The next morning I came out to a steady drip of gasoline that appeared to be coming from my right air filter.  (I have no frame mounted petcock valve so I guess fuel can still flow even when the engine is off)  I pulled the gas tank off and switched the tank's petcock valve to the off position which stopped the drip.  (My tank was almost empty, I guess 10 MPG isn't too bad  :icon_rolleyes:)

Today I fixed the hose routing  ( Gas cap drain to air / Carb breather to air)  I figured that I would be good to go since the water would sink to the bottom of the tank and I had dripped out almost a full tank of gas.  (I had also added a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to help with any remaining water)

I fired it up and had essentially the same result as before.  It struggled for a few seconds and then began spewing gas from the filters.

I pulled the tank off and also noticed a liquid dripping from the filter attached to the cylinder head cover.  It seemed too thick to be gas but too thin to be oil.

I unscrewed the oil cap to check the oil and there was a hissing as the pressure was equalizing.  Checking the dipstick the oil was defiantly to runny.  I'm guessing I somehow got gas in the oil.

I found this thread explaining how to flush the oil ( http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=7549.0 ) but I'm leary of doing it.  Will I just get more gas in my new oil?

Wow, sorry for the long post.
I guess to summarize:

Why does gas spew from the air filters if the breather hose is not blocked?
How did I get gas in my oil?
Why is gas/oil coming from the filter attached to the cylinder head cover?
What should I do now?

Rain Rain go away...

Thanks for any advice.

Your carb floats are stuck open, allowing fuel to keep running into the carbs, causing them to over flow.I would srtip and clean them.

Ok, I drained my "oil" and got about 2.5 gallons of murky liquid out.  Well at least my tank of gas didn't ALL leak out onto the pavement like I had originally thought.
I also opened up the carb floatbowls and found some water and some dirt, other than that they seem all right.  I cleaned them out and closed them back up.
