Title: What do you use to clean/prep the motor for painting ??
Post by: scottpA_GS on May 10, 2008, 03:40:57 PM
Now that my project GS is all torn down I am ready to paint some of the parts and start putting it back together ( I hope )  :icon_mrgreen:

What have any of you used to clean a dirty greasy motor to get ready for paint? What about the frame as well? The frame is going to be sand blasted, so I am not as worried about it. But the motor is soo friggin greasy I just don't see how you can paint it nice...  :dunno_white:

THanks  :thumb:

I will post pics as I get going.. Here is what I started with (got it for $150)  :icon_mrgreen:  Now just imagine it all apart and in baggies and boxes  :icon_mrgreen:

I'd start with some engine degreaser, then go from there.

Try some Simple Green Degreaser, you can get it at Pep Boys or probably any other automotive parts store.

Of course combo that with some heavy scrub brush work!

dude, you got a running gs for $150 ? paint ? hell no, I'd start with the kat front end, kat shocks, and do alllllll the mechanical stuff that makes a really nice twisties bike.

cosmetics are sooo overrated, you're way money ahead already.

just dawg her out and enjoy the ride ! :D

I got this 1990 as a project.  :thumb: So I am in no hurry to get it on the road.. I want to re-do every part and put it back together like new  :thumb:

my recomendations would be to get some wd-40 or simple green and a tooth brush. What color are you spraying it? Also what type of paint. You should clear the paint after you spray it for the simple fact that you want that extra layer of protection. So I would degrease and hit it with 1000 grit wet sandpaper

like I said, you're so far ahead money wise, just rat it out, or do a wild rattle can scheme and make it a bike nobody would want to steal, then do all the front end, rear shock, brakes, and others that will help out performance wise.  Make it a little sleeper 500.

 :thumb: Thanks Babe  :icon_mrgreen:

Im going to use PJ1 Engine paint. Gloss Black I guess like OEM  :icon_mrgreen:

As far as clear coating it... Do they make high temp clear as well?

Bombadillo..
I have no desire to ride a POS rated crappy looking bike. Where I live I could leave the keys in a new Ducati over night and no one would take it  :icon_mrgreen: I want it to look as good as my other GS and restore it from the ground up. Just by taking it completely apart I have learned TONS about the GS. And I know putting it all back together I will gain even more knowledge. :thumb: I also plan some "performance upgrades" as well but I don't see much point it upgrading it too much. :thumb: I love both of my GS twins  :icon_mrgreen: For what they are.. GS500's. I'm not trying to make it into a Gixer  :thumb: And money wise, it will cost me about $50 to do all the paint work.  :thumb:

Thanks guys for all your input! I guess I am headed out to get some degreaser. I will start a new thread as things progress  :thumb:

My experience with painting engine components has resulted in mixed out comes, and I have used quality automotive paints and have cleaned and preped the parts accordenly. With that said, when it comes time for me to paint my engine I will be contacting a few local car and bike shops to see what they use. I figure their the pros and deal with this issue on a regular bases and I'd rather learn from their experience than from my mistakes. Most of these people are pretty cool and they like talking shop. Best of luck and I look forward to seeing your bike when you gotit to where your happy with it, you sound like a man of my own heart when it comes to your bike. --- JIM :)
