Title: How to fix Signal Generator for GS500E
Post by: ricky on May 10, 2008, 03:42:23 PM
I recently dropped my bike and damaged my engine right side where the suzuki emblem used to exit. I am unable to start the bike. Nothing happens after I switch on the ignition & engine switch. I removed the circular bolt inside the signal generator since the screw which held it got bent inside. Everything under the gold plate is intact although the gold plate is little bit bent. btw.. the gold plate seems to be like a magnet, it attracts the circular bolt. Not sure what this whole kit is for. Any help is appreciated.
Model: Suzuki GS500E
Year: 2000

That's the ignition advancer which times the spark.  There should be no interference and the round thing bolted down (the advancer) and anything on the plate.  You could try and straighten out the plate and get what you have working, but your best bet would to buy new/used parts.  Maybe try to make what you have work first, to make sure the engine still runs ok, no odd vibrations (see below about crankshaft).

The ignition advancer is bolted into the crankshaft and you should be aware that with this damage, it's also possible you damaged and/or bent the crankshaft.  Also it wouldn't be a bad idea to take off the left side engine cover (careful! there's oil under there) and check out the magneto to make sure the magnets are still in place.  Loose magneto magnets can make for big potential problems in the engine, but could be ok if you correct it right away.  Not trying to scare you, but just letting you know what other problems you can have with this kind of drop.

hey you said that nothing happens when you switch on the ignition? lights? anything? The bike should still turn over when you press the starter button but the plugs wont spark if your signal generator is bad. (I think)

Remove the ignition advancer and the ignition pick-ups. Make sure the fuse is good. Have someone look at the crank shaft as you turn the bike over. This way you will see if the crank shaft has been damaged. It will not fire since that is the purpose of the advancer and pick-ups, they create the signals to fire the spark plugs.

If the bike will not turn over, you have fried something in the electrical system. This can happen when the advancer comes comes in connect with the pick-ups.

I tried to fit the advancer, but it seems it doesnt want to fit in. I will take a look inside the engine cover to make sure that the magnets are in place. If I have to order this advancer, is its part number 33120-01D00?
btw.. when i switch on the bike, all the lights, signals, horn works properly.

That is the correct part number. Yours is trash, missing part of the tab which creates the dwell (length of spark).

I have never heard of the stator magnets failing from at right side down, only left.

I lost some of the epoxy that holds the stator magnets and I believe it was from being hit on the right side.  Fortunately I just found the epoxy chunks in my oil and was able to repair w/o the magnets ever coming loose.  I could be wrong about it coming from the right side hit, but that's the only thing I'm aware of that could have done it.
