Title: how to mount fog lights?
Post by: Rema1000 on May 13, 2008, 11:02:36 AM
Has anybody mounted auxiliary lights on the forks?  I'm mostly looking for visibility, and less for additional light, so a wide beam (30+ degrees, or maybe fog lights) would be nice.

The most noticable lights I've seen are mounted really low. Mounted on the frame, way down in front, just where it starts to bend up from horizontal. It makes a triangle that seems to really be noticable. You don't want them shining on the road directly in front of you though, it makes for a really weird experience for the rider whenever there is  a bump/dip in the road. The lower lights and the stock headlight make your brain think different things.

There are usually some goldwings that have it like that here. One guy said he purposely got wide angle lights (fog ?) so they were seen from both sides of the road (traffic) and couldn't be missed in the rain in parking lots.

Good luck, and don'tforget just how weak the gs's charging system is ;)

+1 I had thought about some nice white LED pod lights or something... Not super bright but should give you the desired effect and keep the GS's electrical system happy  :icon_mrgreen:

I would adjust the head light and buy a brighter bulb first.

I'm already using Silverstar for the headlamp.

I was looking at MotoLights:
http://www.motolight.com/photo_gallery.php?areaid=14 ($365, ouch)
...but there are some companies making fog lights based on MR16 bulbs, such as Trail Tech:
http://www.trailtech.net/single_halogen_mr16.html ($60 each)
...or a cheap-o for $23 http://www.truckaddons.com/Catalog/subpages/EagleEyeFogDriving01.asp (not sure that's adjustable at all).

MR16 bulbs are available down to 20W, in both spot and flood patterns.  There are also some LED-based ones, though quality is variable.

I am looking to put 2 LED strip of light into the shark openings on the front, I dont like the idea of hanging like a cruiser headlight/foglights on my forks.
