Title: Pothole bent my front rim
Post by: leonidasgto on May 13, 2008, 06:42:53 PM
I knew that this was going to happen.  I was riding for a few hours today, and on the last leg of my trip I hit a deep pothole which flared out my front rim.  The tire will not hold air now.  Does anyone know if this can be fixed?  I called all the bike and tire shops in northern Illinois and no one will touch it.  A new oem rim is $440.  Any suggestions?

The cheapest (and best) you will probably find a wheel to be repaired is by Will Babb for $60 (unless his rate has changed). He is local and has done several for me.

The wheel is polished and will need the tire replaced. The rim is true, but could use a good polishing or sanding and some paint.

I was looking to get $50 plus shipping

Here are a few pics

For future reference 88 to 97 Katana 600/750 has the same wheel as the gs.Just install the GS rotor and put the GS dust cap on the other side of the hub. Also 98 up Katana front wheels will work. They have straight spokes instead of swept spokes. They install just like a GS wheel.Info received by way of the German Wiki.

This is actually a kat wheel, off a '92 750.

I have the dust cap as well for this wheel.

Hmm , i thought you couldnt mount a 98+ , saying that seems the Sv650 is a swop also ,

the pre 97 discs wouldnt go on to a 98+ katana wheel , because then i could have a set of matching wheels , keeping , to the *Stock* look of my Gs

I know the German Wiki states it's a direct swap using the GS front end.I would like to try it on my project bike using a 89-97 Kat front end.I like the swept spoke wheels but the straight spoke wheels look more aggressive.

Sorry I thread jacked.Didn't realize it til I finished the above statement.  :nono:

Thanks for all the info.  I found one guy in Chicago who said he would take a look at it.  Any tips of removing the front tire, never done it before?

Do you mean removing the wheel from the bike, or removing the tire from the rim?

If it's the wheel, it's a pretty simple procedure:

1. Support the front end of the bike (tie it up, or put a block under the engine, or use Scratch's method http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=27361.0 (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=27361.0))

2. Remove the front caliper. Do not let it hang from the brake line. Instead, tie it to the handlebar with a string or bent wire coat hanger. Also, do not touch the brake lever while the lever is off the rotor!

3. Remove the front axle clamping bolt

4. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the front axle

5. Disconnect speedo cable (there is a little Phillip's head screw that holds it in place)

6. Hold the front wheel (I wedge my foot underneath) and slide out the axle

7. Pull out the wheel

8. Done!
