Title: drive chain swapped
Post by: prozach007 on May 13, 2008, 08:21:18 PM
Well took bout 3 hours 2 beers and 4 cigarettes, but I got it done. I have an 04 gs500f, and the chain was LOOSE! Swapped a clip style master link 520 chain. I did some diggin on the net got some ideas and then Texas engineered it. Loosened the main nut, then the adjusment nuts, but I couldnt get the chain loose enough to get it back to the first adjusment mark toward the front of the bike. So I pulled the case cover where the front sproket is to see what I could see, and found a large dirt dobber nest made out of mud and small metal washers, and shims.http://www.flickr.com/photos/26556225@N02/2490647001/in/photostream/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/26556225@N02/2490647001/in/photostream/) No wonder it was getting hard to shift. Still cant get the chain loose enough. So I cut the old chain off with a dremel, and cut the ears off the pin holding the 110th link to get that done. Back to seeing why the tire wont go forward. Google search, GStwin search someone said to pull the shock.  :cookoo: Decided the hell with that and loosened the rear nut on the arm that connects the rr brake caliper to the swing armhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/26556225@N02/2490650537/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/26556225@N02/2490650537/) SUCCESS! Lubed up test rode everything is trakin. Maybe someone knows this already, maybe this will help. I hope so.

The o-rings are from the chain. They are between the side plates and seal it against dirt, and to keep the grease in. The metal peices would have me a bit worried, its vary strange to  big chunks of anything metal in there. Could they have gone to an old chain?

Not sure. I was realy worried at first. Started lossening the the sprocket cover and chunks of dirt and metal and washer start falling out. HOLY CRAP!. Got to looking at the dirt nest and the bugs had incorporated the bits and pieces into their condo. The chain that I pulled off was intact and complete. I am the second owner bike has 11k on it previous owner said he changed the front sproket, but not the chain. Thought that was kind of strange :dunno_white: Anyway the sprokets look good, didnt see anywhere all that stuff could have come from. Rode great on the test ride. I took it easy for a couple of miles, then aired her out to a little over 100 chain was still snug, sproket cover was too. No loud, scary noises. Do all of the sprocket cover bolt have the line up shims or just the one at the 3oclock position. All ideas, knowledge welcome
