Title: wild fluctuation in RPMs
Post by: zenn on May 14, 2008, 06:32:31 PM
something I noticed today. At whatever speed im running, lets say 50mph the needle on the tach continuously jumps between 4-7k. It will settle down for a few secs under heavy acceleration. say going from 50 to 60. once running steady 60 the needle starts jumping again.

89-02...lube the cable.
04+... possible bad connection.

Dgyver is probably right but check this also.

Does the engine rev with the tach movements? If so, the clutch could be out of adjustment, the oil may need to be changed to a motorcycle specific oil,or the clutch friction disc are going bad.

havent had a chance to check it yet.
and no, it doesnt rev with the movement, rhe engine runs steady while the needle bounces around.

If the bike in your avatar is the one with problems it's a cable driven tach.I lube mine by pulling the cable off the bike.I hang it from a wire type clothes hangar and spray penatrating oil in it a couple times aday until it runs out of the low end.Make sure you put something under it,so the oil doesn't drip on the floor.

So based on this thread, it looks like you got this sorted out?

I pulled, lubed and reseated the tach cable, RPMs are stable now...

Thanks all, happy riding... :) :) :)

(just posting a follow up on the outcome for future reference) :icon_mrgreen:
