My left exhaust shim is down to a 2.20 and is still at only .038 mm clearance. Does anyone know how much it would cost to send the engine in to a local specialist and get it fitted with a new valve assembly?
Also, the gs only has 16 K miles. Am I doing something terribly wrong to send it down that many pegs?
Screw the local specialist.
I have trained my local car guys to do this for me. 4 motors so far and counting.
You take off the head and cylinders, hone it, measure it, if it is out of spec, out of round, has divots large enough to hide an SUV in etc etc ... you go 1/2 mm over. Pistons, rings and hand gap everything - BTW that hand gapping will be the ticket that lets it never burn oil at the rings again (it will still use it at the guides though) ... Then piston and cylinders stay as a set cos the rings are gapped to the cylinder. BTW 1/2 over rings have much more tension than the stock, they will seal up like a bank safe on a red alert day ...
Head, put good quality valves in it - Like black diamond from kibble white, cut to 3 angle specs, maybe then replace anything that looks off. Guides, seats etc may be reused, but seals cannot, they need to be swapped (may stop that leak issue actually without swapping guides) and get cams reground to like the fun setup from webcam or megacycle. That is what I would do ... pity, my GR didn't ahve any of this crap available for it, had to get stock valves, no pistons in the 1/2 over, has to make do with stock even though 1 bore is rather large and loose ... bleeeh ... The eli 9 and savage were also much the same ...
Oh yea, they will need to setup the head and check for warpage, and deck it ... fun, you'd definetly lose ~5-15 thousandths easy, making for a nice bump in compression.
All new gaskets etc etc also.

Running a bike lean for long periods causes the valves to receed into the seats and head. And yea auto machine shops can do the work but you must be very specific about what you need done.I would replace all the valves, seats, and guides.Hone cylinders and keep them with in factory recommended specs. This should be in a good shop manual and maybe required by the machine shop.Be prepared.

I ask a friend last night what he charges.Keep in mind that he does lawn mower engines and some aircooled 1 or 2 cylinder bikes. He get's $25 per cylinder to hone,$15 per valve guide,$20 per seat cut and lapped,+ the cost of the valves.
2x$25= $50 cylinder hone
4x$15= $60 valve guides installed + parts
4x$20=$80 valve seats installed,cut and lapped in+parts
extra for valves,springs,and keepers
Total labor $190 assuming the head is straight and doesn't need to be shaved.
Ooooo that number is close ... My engine shop do straight hourly, I believe I hit the 150 mark including a head shave. The time they bill me for is only the time the tech stands there fitting it on the machine, so if he bolts it on and it does 20 mins but he spends only 10, I get away with 10.
I take a bunch of crap ... and put in their washer. Free.
