Got the chain and 15 tooth cog finished today. Makes starts much smoother, think I'm going to love the ratio for slower speed stuff, parking lots, etc.
I did have a rattle when cruising @ 55 mph in 5th or 6th. Could have been one of the axle adjusters, I dunno. I got the feeling it was the front cog making a racket on the spline, since it lacks the 1/8" or so shoulder the stock 16 tooth has.
I spaced out the 15T with a washer from Ace when I realized it wouldn't be as tight as the one with the shoulder.
Should I request the stock type shouldered 15T, or am I being paranoid ?
Other than the initial take off which requires much less clutch, it's really not noticable. I only got her up to 65-70, for a short time, and the rpm difference was negligible.
The brand new chain really makes a difference. After 24,000 miles the stock chain was plenty tight and worn. The front cog was worn a little, but no where near shark toothed. The rear sprocket isn't worn at all. :)
the 15 tooth should be fine my rpms went to 8,000 at 90mph. Had no problem with it except i had to shift up and down through 1st and second while riding in the city more then i wanted to. But its still nice... just be carefull... i found out if i dropped the clutch to fast at a higher rpm the back end would break loose or the front would come up.. made my butt pucker the first time.

what year is your gs?
It's a 98, sorry, should have specified that. :)
I found some posts by Kerry that indicate he has used the non-shouldered sprocket, but it produced unpleasant "clacking" noises. He ended up changing it for a sprocket with a shoulder:

If you run without the shoulder, you probably want to install some washers as a spacer.

It will eventually wear the transmission shaft.
I put a 15T front sprocket on my 97 GS at about 37k miles and replaced with the same up to 80k miles. I got my chains and front sprockets from Chaparral at the time and they sold Sprocket Specialist sprockets and they all came without the shoulder for all year GS's.
I checked with Sprocket Specialists and they said the shoulder was not necessary and that the narrower front sprocket would align itself from the rear sprocket. I never added a spacer to locate the sprocket and found it was always sitting there next to the snap ring everytime I took the cover off with the extra space behind the sprocket where the hub would have been.
I never had any problems with the 15T shoulderless sprockets on the 97 for the over 40k miles I ran them and never detected any spline shaft wear, always had a good fit.
I put a 16T SS sprocket w/o hub on my 02 GS with the 2nd replacement chain and left the wheel missaligned a bit over the winter and noticed when I was putting the next chain on that the shoulderless sprocket was a bit wobbly on the spline shaft. I replaced the sprocket with a oem one and all was fine, there was no shaft wear so must have worn the sprocket spline on the inside. I have always used 16T front on the 02 and am glad that Chaparral supplies the JT sprockets now with the hub but wouldn't be afraid to use a hubless one again if that was all I had. Would just be a bit more careful with the chain alignment. Could be that is why Suzi added the hub back in 92 or 93, there are probably a lot of missaligned rear wheels out there.
Added PS: I don't do wheelies, your spline wear may be different. :laugh:
