Cold hot dogs is actually incredibly dangerous thing to eat...

Studies have shown a high level of the harmful bacteria Listeria in hot dogs. Thus, for added precaution, persons at risk may choose to avoid eating hot dogs and luncheon meats, such as bologna, unless they are reheated until steamy hot.

From the USDA site

http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Factsheets/Hot_Dogs/index.asp

Just a thought.  I got very sick a couple of years ago eating a cold hotdog.

really? wow. i've eaten cold hot dogs so many times over the years and never gotten sick. my middle daughter(she's almos 3) likes em that way. the wife says we're nasty and insists we heat them up.

hate to say it but i agree with the wife.  i was in the hospital for 3 weeks because of the bacteria in those things.  i still enjoy a decent hotdog but it has to be cooked now

who are "persons at risk"?
Title: Re: hotdogs
Post by: darb85 on May 18, 2008, 11:31:06 PM
Myth 7: Hot dogs are pre-cooked, so it's okay to eat them raw.

Fact: Actually, it's important to always reheat hot dogs until they're steaming hot. Some ready-to-eat foods, such as hot dogs, can become contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes after they have been processed and packaged at the plant. If it's not possible to reheat hot dogs, don't eat them.

http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~pregnant/newmyth.html

A person with listeriosis has fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur

Straight from my wife a clinical microbioligist.

Listeria is a free living water bacteria :icon_rolleyes:

Pseudomonas is the hot dog bacteria.

Enjoy your hotdogs cold as long as they have not been setting around open in yoiur fridge more than a few days.

Cook them (bring them up to 160 degrees) and then chill them in the fridge.  Then you can still enjoy 'em cold without the risk of listeria.

But they are fully cooked anyway, so the risk is really pretty darn low.

I prefer mine hot, with lots of mustard and sweet pickle relish.  I do not like ketchup on my dogs.

I always thought hotdogs were repulsive.  I have found however that I don't mind some good sushi once in a while.  Perhaps the hotdogs would be safer if you coated them with wasabi and soy sauce? :dunno_white:

I like em cold with spicy BBQ sauce as a quick snack after drinking before I go to bed. If they don't flouresce under the woods lamp theres not enough pseudomonas to worry about

Best to stick to beef.  Much safer... you can eat it raw if you feel the need (allegedly).
Title: Re: hotdogs
Post by: bettingpython on May 22, 2008, 06:45:49 AM
On steak bacterium only forms on the outside surface of the meat, so the sear it receives from cooking is what allows even aged beef to be eaten rare. Once it is ground perforated etcetera it is best to follow proper cooking procedures. Thus all beef hot dogs have the same risks associated with them since everything going into the casing is ground to a paste form. And again the hotdog bacteriun regardless of type is pseudomonas.

Pork needs cooked to at least a medium because trichinosis lives inside the tissue.

Trust me dinner conversations with my wife can sometimes leave me not wanting to eat the rest of my dinner. Don't marry a microbioligist if you don't want to know about all the little things in stuff.
