Title: Yelp!!! Bike's misfiring, running like crap, surging and its windy today
Post by: TheGoodGuy on May 21, 2008, 10:10:47 AM
So I guess my bike's jetting is completely out. The last time I rode it, it was in teh evening, and it was running pretty good execpt for slight surging at 65mph.. but it would pull upto 90mph no problems.

That wsa a few weeks ago (maybe a month) and then today I was forced to ride it to work. Its windy here in So.Cal.

I am seeing surging at low rpm's at 40-50mph (6th gear) and it at one time started to die, i switched to neutral and pulled over revved it and put it in prime.. however it seems random but its surging and dying.. weird. Then when i was pulling into work, the darn thing gave a few huge misfires..

I know my battery is weak (had to jump start the bike) this morning (charged it last week - time for a new batt i think). I had cleaned out the carbs a while back, the bike had old gas that i had pulled out and put fresh 91 octane (recent) with some stabil and some Gumout gas treatment.

I think i might need to add seafoam in there to. Otherwise she seems to run except for the surge.. She idles good, has lots of power.

I dont remember the jets off hand but I bellieve its in my signature. I got the K&N lunchbox and 20, 62.5 and 147 I believe with 2 shims under each needle.

So the "buddha" said.. "clean carbs out".. I guess I got to do it once again. I last did the last time i worked on teh bike ... but I guess I need to take her apart and clean the shaZam! out of it.. might as well check the valves while I am at it. Though I think it should be in spec, it was last done in 2005 I think and i havent ridden it more than 1000 miles since.

When my battery was weak a while back, my bike would act kind of like this.  Don't know why exactly, but I changed the battery to the sealed wal-mart one, and I had no more problem.  (my carbs are clean though, so you may have more than just the battery to deal with)

Is adding Stabil, Gumout and Seafoam to the same fresh tank of gas actually recommended?

probably not a good idea.  I don't know if anything bad would happen, but it doesn't sound good.  I'd run this tank as is, then add the seafoam in the next tank.  Seafoam has always worked great for me.  You may not need it though after that other stuff.

I think I might want to put a fuel filter in there. What size fuel filter did you folks put and where is it at - before or after the petcock?

1/4 inch clear filter after the petcock and lower than the petcock.Make sure the filter is motorcycle specific or rated for gravity feed.Got mine at NAPA for $3.50.Have you checked your float height?Sometimes if it's to high it will cause surging.

Well I know the battery is dead.. but I also know that when the carb gets clogged (for whatever reason) it nearly dies.. you cant open the throttle to do anything, it wont rev and it misfires like hell. Last night after I got pegged by the older driver, i rode it home and it did that af ew times, but I managed to get it home. I am going to get a fuel filter and clean out the carbs one last time. I am sure its remenants of the old gas in the tank. I spilled a bit the last time i was draining the tank and it left a powdery residue after it evaporated.

If you're opening the carbs, just go all the way, chase every jet, hole and passage with a welding wire cleaner or spray type carb cleaner. You can use less caustic stuff and more mechanical cleaning, like metal tooth brushes and carb cleaner spray etc etc ...
Now what powdery residue ??? rust ?? Yea definete fuel filter, and even so you may need to clean carbs often. And change that filter often. I basically got 6 weeks out of this filter and my tank isn't even too bad on the virago.
Cool.
