Hey guys,
I just picked up my first bike, 2006 gs500F with 3300miles for $3k --a good deal?
However, while having the bike inspected, i found that the front brake does not engage the rear brake light... any ideas what could be causing this?... the bulb isn't burned the rear brake engages the light
Secondly, on the way home, a nail lodged in the rear tire... It's happened before on the mustang (a quick 5 dollar fix)... any idea what it costs to repair the small hole in the rear tire for a motorcycle?
In conclusion, I'm still in the process of purchasing gear.. Any suggestions for a good summer jacket? I have a used AFX helmet that came with the bike, however I'm apprehensive to use it cause its a lil scrapped (dropped i think)-- would you use the year old AFX or buy a new one? which model would you go with ?
Thanks for everything... This is obviously the best site for anything gs 500 related, I look forward to using all of your advice in the future.
Charlie
Welcome.
There is a little switch under the brake lever.Check that and see if the wires are bare or broke. Also listen for a click as you pump the lever. The button that the lever releases as it's pulled to the handle bar maybe stuck and not popping out.
Tire plugs and patches are a great debate.Motorcycle tire plugs are way different than automotive tire plugs. They are straight with a patch made tho the end that seals the inside of a tire. Many shops will not patch/plug a tire.Is the nail in the tread, in a groove,or on the part that contacts the road?A pic would really help.I never plug MC tires. Some here have/do.It's a personal risk assessment.
I have a mess Icon jacket with armor,River Road Mojave Mesh pants with armor and removable waterproof insulated liner,Power Trip US Army Abrams gloves,Nitro Matrix boots, and an EXL modular helmet. If you are buying boots, buy a half size larger.Helmets really should be tried on for fit. What may fit me well may not fit you well.A helmet needs to fit tight. At highway speeds the helmet will shake violently and become unnerving. If a helmet has been scraped up I would replace it.Scrapes can cause weak places in the shell. If you crash and the helmet takes a hit it may break in the damaged area.
Here's a recent link about personal experiences with helmets. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=41505.0
Hey Charlie, noticed you're in KC. Welcome to the board. My bike is currently in pieces but nearing completion. We'll have to ride sometime when I get it back together.
Good luck getting things fixed. Your brake light issue sounds like a switch or a wiring connection. Shouldn't be too tough to get figured out. As for the nail, I've plugged my tire without any problems, but I can't advocate it.
Matt
Find the switch (under the front brake lever) find the 2 black leads running to the switch, pull them off the connectors and short them together, if the light comes on....... the switch is toast. If it doesnt.....the problem is down to something else.
thanks guys: the nail isn't in a grove, the tires look pretty good, but I'm gonna replace it anyway.
The switch is toast. So it's in the shop until the new tire comes in.
2thexcavator, I'll let you know when the bikes working again, and for sure lets go riding
