My trusty GS seems to have developed a small oil leak on the top-right side of the case, just to the rear of the oil cap. It's still rideable, with just a little bit seeping out, but I'd like to fix it before it gets worse. Is fixing this going to be as simple as just removing that side of the engine and replacing a gasket, or is this going to be a nightmare? Any suggestions or insights would be welcome.
I just had to do this to mine. The gasket was $15 dollars from the local dealer and I recommend investing in a gasket scraper. I also replaced the o-ring on the filler cap while I was at it.
You'll need to drain the oil and take of the right hand cover which will involve removing the "pulse generator" parts. Known round here in Kansas as the "distributor stuff". There are 2 of the bolts under that cover as well. Take all the bolts out and the cover should come off easily. Scrape off the old gasket, put on the new gasket and re-assemble and torque the case bolts to 10 NM. They can break at 20 NM. I learned this the hard way after miss-interpreting the specs from my Haynes manual.

local old shop owner has a roll of cork and sells in it in length and says to take teh biggest part and trace around it then sketch the same shape inside it, depending on the size necessary. then take the next smaller piece and repeat. kind of a hokey way of doing it, but cheaper than paying 20 bucks for one.
The GS case gasket is very thin and very wierd. I would REALLY not want to duplicate it in cork. Trust me, with the 20-some odd holes and and the inner and outer portions it's worth the money to just buy one. It's not that expensive.
