Located in Burlington, NC
I decided to go for a quick ride today on my lunch break and happened to come across a man that was selling two '92 GS500E's. He wants $350 for the pair and said he only wants to sell them as a pair.
Both bikes have been wrecked... One has been flipped over (looks like driver gave too much front brake!) and the other has been laid down on the left side.
Neither one are in working order, but the frames on both look to be in perfect shape (just did a quick walk around since I had to get back to work). They both suffer from what I call Neglect damage (rust, corrosion, faided paint, etc...).
If anyone here is interested in them, I can go back and take some pics within the next few days.
I thought about getting them, but I had a hard enough time trying to get my wife to stop nagging about buying one, I know I'll be sleeping on the couch for months to come should I come home with another two!
I maybe interested. What is Burlington near?Address to where the bikes are located and phone number also.Thanks.
Burlington is located on I 40/85 between Greensboro and Durham (about 30 mins from both). Don't know phone number or exact address, but they are located on Chapel Hill Street off of Exit 145.
what were the motors like?
Like I said, all I did was a quick walk-around, but one was missing a couple of covers and from what i could tell the other looked in decent shape.
I went back by after work to get an address and phone number, but he wasn't there and they were pulled back inside. I'll try to get pictures and more information this weekend.
They are located at a "Second-Hand" shop.
I'd like to know if he is going to be there between 3 and 5 pm tomorrow sat the 31st.I'm bringing cash and a truck.
I can try to run by there tomorrow and see... if you don't mind... you can pm me your phone # and i can call you if/when i find something out! I've never stopped by the store before today so i don't know what it's normal operating hours are.

ben... You better get em! :icon_mrgreen: post pics of the entire process... I want to see the guy hand you the keys :icon_mrgreen: What a documentary  The $350 GS500 Twins O0
I dunno if it will happen but I'm gonna try.I have nearly a complete bike I'm working on.If I can pick up these 2 + my 90 GS project Lite Wait,I could have 3 running bikes.I would have my black 89(avatar),project Lite Wait, another bike and a parts bike.I hope it comes thru. It's 4 hours away tho.I have faith that 06GSF will come thru. :thumb:
ill be hounding you for parts soon. im beginning to get the john deere project going before long
Take your GS's battery with you too and a few tools .... at leats hear them crank over...but wreck /slide damage usually means they were running.
Titles? You can probably get him down some more (tho $350 isn't bad for two bikes...WITH titles )don't be afraid to ask...all he can do is say no....If the motors are solid -you can't go wrong parting them out....Or fix em up for sale (gas prices..economy bike...).
06GSF contacted me this morning.Looks like the guy was away for the weekend. So he's gonna check monday.I have to make a day trip to Kentucky monday to drop off my G/F 2 daughters at their grandmothers. If my truck could carry more than 2 people I would go by on my way back.So it's looking like a day trip tuesday with the G/F.I am taking tools, asking for titles, and possibly trailering them back.My battery is dead and my charger got fried.Litterally! It caught fire last fall and I have not replaced it.I had a battery minder but I think it was stolen over the winter.
I would like to thank 06GSF for all he is doing, for me to get these bikes.Don't find many guys like him anymore.
I don't mind helping out, but I don't believe either one of them would be possible to start without many hours of labor first. I'm not as efficient as most of the guys and girls on here, so who knows... maybe you'll be able to do it!
well take the dead battery, and a pair of jumper cables, leave the vehicle off and boost from car battery :thumb:
I dunno what this push to get it started is all about, I never even attempt to start them before opening it all up ... this even if the guy is selling it as a runner that's got some small issue. There are too many problems with starting somehting that dwarf the pleasure of starting it. Hydrolock and bending somehting, or having the cylinders dry and getting it worn sooner if oil isn't getting up well etc etc ...
Cool.

That's what I have to do now. If my bike was running the battery would get charged and stay charged. It's not ready for the road yet but it's getting close. :thumb:

Ben... if I can get up with the guy tomorrow, would it be better to call you with all the details or PM you the # and address? Also... I'll try to remember to grab my camera on the way out to work so I can take some pics and send them to you so you'll know a little more about what to expect.

At least there was a nice GS to look at in the background!
That red one is in rough shape.

Well thank you... I love the Black and Silver scheme of mine
Orginally i thought the red one had been flipped forward by using to much front brake, but after I had the chance to walk around them a little more than i did the other day, it looks like he/she may have ran into something with it.
Still... I don't think it's a bad price for them, who knows, the guy may even be willing to come down on the price.
Yeah, judging by the cracked rim and bent forks, I'd say they hit something, hard. Maybe a curb at about 45mph.
Regardless of who gets them, I would like the VIN #s for the GS Census (http://vtxstar.com/GSpopcount.htm).
Bike #1 is the same as mine...'92 and pink on purple :thumb:
Body looks great on the red as well as frame on both...if not bent. Prolly a great deal!
I am going to haul a trailer up there and make an offer tomorrow.
Starwalt, you will have the VINs.Do you need them for my 89 & 90?

If all goes well, you'll own 4 GS's. Is that a record?

Yes I will and no it's not a record.I believe Buddha holds the record for completed GS's.I know dgyver currently has 3.

I'll check and see if I can part with them.
I have bought 12, and sold 10, I currently own 2. However Jared possibly has me beat.
For me though the bike has to get put back on the road with full paperwork, else I dont count it. So I dont buy titleless wonders, and part it out. If I buy it without title, I'll get it titled before I am done and I'll use it till its sold.
Cool.

ya, buy those bikes. stick em out back behind the house, and part one to pay for registering the 'good' one, and making it road worthy. :)
good luck with em !
Except in NC if you tried to register it, it will cost you much more than you'd ever be able to sell either one for. SC may be different. Personally I have done 1, and I am not doing it again. Title ... or its essentially scrap, I am not parting sheite out, too much work. I ahve enough trouble with the carbs people send me, I am constantly sending the wrong pics to people, and they dont know what the hell I'm talking about when I do send the right info ...
Cool.

Good news.Got the bikes.Bad news.No paper work,1 engine is locked, the other I can turn over with a screw driver, both front ends are beyond repair, both front wheels are bad, along with the all rotors, both tanks are gone on the bottom,1 set of carbs are so bad I may not be able to save them, other set of carbs are badly damaged. No clue how carbs get beat to death.Looks like I bought some scrap metal.I don't even have enough parts to finish project lite wait.I'll start on them next week and see what nuts and bolts I can salvage.
Oh yea.The red bike chucked it's oil out the carbs and back up into the tank.It must have been on it's side for a long time to do that. It's also the one that's locked up.
i was wondering if u'd be willing to part those red rear plastics :-D

I need all the body work off the red bike.Sorry.
I have a kat carb rack I split and been experimenting with various things to do sheite to it. Now I have 1 set of GS carbs I am building and maybe a second ... but I can do one more set, or you can have the other 2 ...
I'd like the tank if its got holes on the underside for some truly serious experimenting   ... How about we trade, 2 carb bodies (no jets, slides, guides, emulsion tubes, floats, choke, bowls but they are freaking clean etc for the tank. OK I can give you float bowls (I never sold one of them in like ... ever) and a choke or 2, but these were scratched up in my attempt to remove it. Anyway let me know.
You have to split the GS rack and fit these in and swap everything over. Essentially if 1 carb is bad, these will make a great swap in. If both are bad, well, I'd just forget the thing.
Cool.

I lose washers and grommets and stuff like that a lot, like stuff that can roll, bounce or just plain walk away ... :o

oh hey ben if you start to tear into one of the motors and find that you dont need a crank and some other parts (i have a list) please let me know.. Going to try to rebuild the my motor where the rod bolt came undone. and dgyver has me halfway there with parts(thank god) and i would like to make it the rest of the way..
As soon as I get a chance to go thru the bikes.I will return pm's and send pm's to people that want parts. :thumb:
Damn I need an engine, do u know if the motor works on it, whoever buys it ill be interessted in purchasing a motor if the rest of the bike is fuked up.... .

I know that both engines are dead.My plan is to put the 2 together and hopefully with a top end rebuild have an engine for my 90 GS.The bike with the busted ignition cover has a bent crank.
dude thats a good deal even with the problems, cant beat that. :thumb:

Who knows? You may have the high VIN # for those years.
Just PM me - no hurry though. Work is going to be ugly for the next four weeks.
Glad you got your self two....<ahem> projects :icon_lol:

I have bought 12...and sold 8...I think....That includes my original 89 I bought (black-my first bike..) in 91...
3 Were parts bikes that got busted down...(One that Srinath bought from me..).
Currently I have 2 " rideable" Gs's and a third back burner project I may never get back to.....
So no I don't have you beat.....Close or a tie at best...
Oooooo ... a tie ... isn't that insane ...
Anyway, Your frame is with me, that is my #12 ... and I have GR motor in it, now does it count as a GS ... yea I counted it in my 12. Didn't count the frame I passed on to werase, it had a title ... But a frame is a frame, not a bike.

I have 20+ storage boxes with mostly GS parts. They are stored on 2 sets of pallet racks.
I started building another engine using a GS450 bottom end. I thought I only had 1... but apparently I had bought a 2nd and forgot about it. It was next to the GR boxes so I may have thought it was one of them.
Yea ... the GS parts should be socialised with the GR's ... they will be more GR like ...

I have a Q about the GS450 engine. Is it a 6 speed and is the crank stronger than the GS?I think we talked about this but I'm kinda in a fog from all this heat.
Its got a roller bearing crank.
Cool.
Buddha.
Cool. It'll handle a little more pow wow than the GS crank. No more snapin cranks when used with a giant over bore.
The GS450 has the same crank as the GS500. My 97 has a GS450 crank in it. I have another GS450 crank sitting on my bench if you want to see it.
The only motors I have seen that use roller bearings are 2-stroke.

I'm sure I'll be your way soon.
There is 1 gs series bike that has a roller bearing crank. GS400 maybe ...
There is atleast 1 non 2 stroke suzuki that has a roller bearing crank. Savage 650. Anyway, one of the 2 cyl GS'es also have a roller crank.

Note: most of the specifications for the 400-450 are pretty much the same. I've left cells blank where I'm unsure of exact numbers, but if you see a blank cell for a model, and the data to either side are the same, you can assume the info is probably the same for the blank cell. Note the change of stroke between the GS425 and 450, when they went from a roller bearing big end to plain bearing rods.
I knew I had seen that somewhere, and it just was bothering me I couldn't remember where ... But yes that is an excerpt from the old Michael Moore mailing list ... from my previous life when I was a card carrying member ...
