Title: For those who replied to my Engine locking troubles...
Post by: themarsvolta on May 31, 2008, 10:37:12 AM
Hey All,

I have found the problem to my engine locking up.  The exhaust valve seat broke into a few pieces causing the lock up.  Suzuki, I have found out, doesn't sell just the seperate seat.  They only sell the head as a whole.  I'm new to this motorcycle thing, so if I sound uneducated on the subject, it's because I am. lol

If anyone has any suggestions on if I can use a used seat or if you have had this problem and have a solution, I'm open to anything but buy a new head.

Thanks!

Donnie

I think they are sold together because these parts are precision machined to fit together as a unique set. There was a similar thread a short time ago, but I can't seem to find it now. :( I'm sure someone else will chime in soon with more details...

Valve seats can be replaced. Not sure why they are not listed or where to get them.

I have spoke to my machinist that does my engine work about replacing a seat on a milled head I have. He never gave me a price but said it would be cheaper to mill a different head.

Yea seats, guides etc are all available from kibblewhite. The stockers are OK but kibblewhite is really good. BTW seats and valves are machined to the 3 angle specs, and they sorta wear together, but no reason you cannot cut a new seat on a seat, and cut a new 3 angle on the valve (with a valve lifted off another motor even really) and toss them together. Heck I know this guy who will machine up a car valve that is close but larger than a GS valve and make it fit ... I was gonna do it to the GR last year ... only thing is, he charges $20-25 for a valve and I bought new for $18 or so. Yea ... pull that seat out, pull all the valves out, get the seats all machined up with a nice 3 angle, and cut the 3 angle on the  valves and fit it back. Better than new, cos suzuki never bothered to cut a 3 angle on these I think.
Cool.
