Title: GS wingrack - with pics
Post by: crazyfish on June 05, 2008, 02:29:03 PM
Here's what a wingrack looks like on a GS, the mounting brackets you have to do a DIY job on but can be made using materials easily available from your local DIY shop and using no special tools. Sorry for the poor quality pics, ive jus got a phone camera at the moment and it doesnt do too well in low light... This is a very low cost way into hard luggage because there are plenty of used wingracks lying around on ebay, and plenty of used cases.

you brits may have racks and bags everywhere, but here in the us all we have are go fast parts. or stuff to suck the fuel out of your bike and make more noise but not power.

I Wouldnt ever put a rack on a motorbike, i think it just ruins the look of it , i can fit all the stuff i need for a weekend in a bag , and just be fine with it ,  and i have all the fast parts on my gs  :thumb:

Yeah, with just a top box you can get a second person on the bike (if they're small), but the panniers get in the way of the rear footpegs when they're on. For bumbling round town ill mostly use just a top box or rucksack anyways, the panniers are more for touring, and as much as it looks cramped theres plenty of room infront of them if you're just riding solo.

As far as looks go, I quite like it, it balances it out and makes it look a bit longer, i was suprised how well the GS pulls it off. Don't get me wrong i wouldn't put a rack on a monster or gixxer, that would just look wrong.

Cost wise
The hard cases were £99 for the pair off ebay (thats 2 45l cases)
The rack was £80 if you include P&P (also ebay)
I had to get the indicators seperately because the rack I won on ebay didn't come with them so add £45 (you can get them cheaper on ebay but none were going when i needed them)
For making the mounting brackets i just butchered some steel roofing straps form B&Q and spray painted them black (~£20 for metal and paint)

so all together thats about 250 english pounds.

I could have got it down to £200 by buying a rack that came with indicators but hey ho.....

yes it ruins the look but adding that is for function and not aesthetics.  if you are going on a trip you will need something to hold your stuff...or you could have a follow along car lol.  is it easy to take the brackets off?

Pretty easy to remove it. The whole rack lifts off in one piece with the bracket attaching it to where the pillion bar was attached and there are two brackets at the bottom which are easy enough to remove with the rear plastics off. Putting the rack on or taking it off takes about 20mins because you have to put the stock rear indicators back on a re wire them, if you had indicators integrated into your tail light you could take it on and off in about 5.
