MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- A car plowed into a weekend bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others, police said.
The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race, said police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez.
A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.
Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey.
Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer (21 mile) race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.
Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that.
"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved,"

yea thats real bad news.
Where there is alcohol there will be drunk drivers regardless of penalty imposed. They could give the driver the death penalty and still people would drunk drive.
Let's think about this one for a minute. Every race I've been in during the warmer months have started around 6:30-7:30 am. Road races are a fantastic spectical of speed, endurance and strategy. Winning one on strategy more than speed is a real treat. These guys have thousands (more likely tens of thousands) of miles on two skinny wheels, soaking up the sun.
They've dodged cats, dogs, rats, possums, trucks, motorcycles, birds, bird poop (well, I didn't :( ) and been smacked by hundreds of bugs.
The training is expensive for the time it takes, effort and energy output for a simple goal: To race.
Along comes an idiot that destroys their dreams, ruins their bodies and takes a dear friend, racing opponent, and chances of ever having a coveted CAT 1 or even sponsored Pro racer status.
Great. And because he was 'just drunk' he'll be excused after serving a little time in jail. He made conscious choices leading up to the -murder-, and should be treated as such.
My heart goes out to the family and cycling community there. They were just out for a spin with friends, and a dickhead killed one of their mates. :(
What a tragedy, that picture is horrifying.
Its scary how many drunk drivers there are on the roads. You'd think that after all the people who have died due to it, people would learn. I guess for some, it doesn't effect them unless it happens to them. Shame.
My dad was pulling out from a crossroads with his right of way on his motorbike, and a Drunk driver came flying down the road at 60 mph , and hit him , distroyed the bike , he flew into guard railings and was like wrapped round them , he was prenouced Dead On the way to hospital , but came back some how ,in total he lost 8 pints of blood and needed constant Transfusions , Lucky to be alive isnt the word , i think the bloke got maybe 5 years of prison , my dad lost his leg and cant use his right hand.. 5 years for ruining a life
