Post by: lewismug on June 09, 2008, 07:56:11 AM
Any of you know of any GS's that have been modded to have a diesel engine?

I'd be curious of that too. I know the government/military uses KLR650s that are converted to run on diesel.

Wonder how much one of the engines mentioned in the following article would be?

The website of the company that makes the diesel conversions and has the military contract says they have had to post-pone production of the civilian version....

If it's set up right you could get 100+mpg for commuting. That'd easily pay for itself.

lewismug.

I have heard of one that uses an air cooled Yanmar diesel and a Torq A Verter for a transmission. It wasn't fast and top speed was 65mph.It got 120mpg.

I drive my diesel now.  It gets around 40mpg in town compared to the volvo's mid 20's.....easily pays for the extra 50 cents a gallon

If I could double my range, the new engine would pay for itself in a matter of months with the mileage I drive each week.  Right now, since I moved a little farther from my work, I'm averaging 1,000 miles a week and that's without any around town/errands.  This would be a vast improvement from what I have now and not even a comparison for the mileage my Volvo gets!  When I was driving the Volvo, it was costing me around 800 a month just on fuel @ $70.00 for each tank.  I had to fill it up 3 days a week.  Since I've been riding my bike, it's dropped to around 400 a month.  This mod would put me below my current fuel costs and well below the original fuel costs on my car.  The bike has already paid for itself in fuel savings since I only gave $800.00 for it in February.  For me, this would be worth it, even if diesel goes to $5.50 a gallon!  Right now, it's around $4.50/gal here.

Sure, you get a steel BOX and no matter what engine you're running, it's gonna get crappy mileage!

Diesels can run on seed oils (hemp seed oil, peanut oil), vegetable oils, coconut oil (coco methyl esther), soy been oil...  And so on.

But, really...  Diesel engines are just a stopgap measure.  We all just needs to get over the internal combustion engine and move on.  Now only if the US government wasn't so heavily controlled by oil executives.

Diesel powered bikes are nothing new, they have been around for decades, they never took off because the requirements, dynamics and characteristics of a diesel engine do not lend themselves well to those of a bike. As such they have little appeal and no advantage over petrol versions and people have never taken to them. Very few people buy a bike just on economy grounds and those that do buy step-thrus, mopeds and scooters which can easily turn 100mpg and cost next to nothing to run. Ok you get an improved mpg figure with this bike, but you will also get increased maintenace, spares and running costs, plus its secondhand value will plummet way below its petrol equivalent due to the lack of popularity it will have so any financial gains it might offer can be questioned. Bear in mind the reasons this bike have come about are down to a NATO regulation and the fact the military are good payer, there is nothing to say market conditions and public demand have played a part.

When one of the big-four launch a Diesel powered bike you will know they have become a practical proposition and there is a market for them.
