Title: Windshield for an 89?
Post by: pherthyl on June 09, 2008, 09:03:25 AM
Hey everyone,

Just been looking for a windshield for my 89GS since I'm planning on doing a few longer trips this summer and the wind is kind of a pain at highway speeds...  Looks like any of the F series would be ok.  The only thing is that most distributors say that they fit the GS500E, 1990-2002, with no mention of the 89.  Now I assume that this is probably just an oversight (the 89 has the clip on bars, but those windshields don't seem to attach to the bars).

Just to make sure though, has anyone mounted a F series windshield (or anything else really) on the 89?  Or if someone has one lying around they're willing to sell...

Cheers,
Leo

If you mean the National Cycle F-15-16-18 windshields, NC also says they fit only 90-02 GS500/E models and they do mount to the headlight brackets.

Even stranger Slipstreamer says their Spitfire, Cobra, Viper, and Hellfire shields will fit 89-02 GS500/E models and they mount to the handlebars.  Must be room for their narrow clamps on your clip on bars.

I use a Spitfire in the summer and a NC Plexi 2 winters.

I have an 89 with a a Targa fairing. It's in my avatar. If you have the factory 89 clip on type handle bars you'll have to fabricate brackets. If you have the standard bars they will fit.The 89 is the only year that the US bikes got factory clip on bars.

Yeah those are the ones I meant.   It is weird, since they don't have anything to do with the handlebars, yet do not explicitly support the 89.  Maybe I'll send them an email...

Hmm.. I suppose I could go for one of those.  I like the look of the F series a bit better, but the slipstreamers probably give better wind protection.
