Title: Not Winterized
Post by: error on June 11, 2008, 07:16:19 AM
I have a GS that wasn't winterized over this last winter. I searched around and compiled a list of what I need to do:

Clean or replace spark plugs
Drain carb float bowls
Clean carbs if necessary
Charge or replace battery
Siphon gas and fill up
Check and clean air filter
Replace oil and filter

Am I missing anything? Is there a specific order to these jobs?

Your list looks good to me. Rather than siphoning out the fuel, I would remove the tank and drain it completely. That way you can inspect for internal rust and make sure there is no residual water sitting in the tank.

I don't think any specific order is required for these tasks. Although, if you tank the tank off, you might as well go ahead with a carb cleaning while you have easy access.

Also (not really related to winterizing), make sure you check the condition and pressure of your tires, and lube/adjust the chain before riding.

All that is deff. the "right" way to do it..

I store my bike every year full of gas. Come spring, I check the tires, oil, chain and fire it up and ride  :thumb:

As expensive as gas is I see no need to drain it out just to put new in  :dunno_white:

You store the bike in a garage or outside....all you need to do is a full tank of gas and some gas stabalizer and remove the battery and put it on a tender.   I have had bikes since 1985 and winters that last 8 months long with -30 deg C...... take my word for it....anything else is an over kill.

Cleaning and possibly sealing the tank inside with POR-15 is a must. Once I bought my GS500 I did carb cleaning and replaced all valves, jets, floats, etc. There was tons of rust. I did not do the tank. Guess what,  less than a year I had to do it all over again because bike was running like POS. I found that it was again filled with rust residue. Even the fuel filter did not help. So do your tank.

Also check if your tires developed any flat spots being in prolonged single-spot contact with the floor. Check all rubber parts like fork seals etc for cracks. They may dry off if neglected.

Good luck!
