Title: Desperate! Need cam caps!
Post by: anticoriolis on June 12, 2008, 04:40:19 PM
Hey guys, I JUST bought a bike a month or so ago and just found out that the last guy to work on it overtightened a bunch of stuff... including the cam caps, two of which he cracked! Does anyone have a seized motor that they could sell me cam caps off of? I'd consider buying the entire head if the price was right, but I'm pretty broke after buying the bike!

Send me an email if you can help!! Thanks!

The cam caps are lined bored with the head. Very doubtful that you will find a set to fit properly.

I've heard that but I can't afford a new head, and my mechanic thinks it'll work so I'm going to give it a go if someone will sell me a set. If there's a third option I'm all ears!

You should be able to pick up a used head for $50 to $100.I can assure you that it will not hold up if it matches up at all.It only takes a fraction of the width of a hair to kill the cam and journals.Suzuki had crap for tolerances on their castings. You'll end up doing the work twice.

Several years ago I had about 6 heads and I swapped the caps to see how they fit on each of the other heads. Not one was even close to being within toreance to be used. If off a little, the cap can break again and you also risk damaging your cams with misaligned caps.

That is not good news. My bike is a 2001 and it doesn't have the black engine coating on it, it's all silver under there. Think there are other differences in the head? It's going to be hard to re-sell it with a two-tone motor...

The heads are all basically the same...

except...

In 04 the electric tach was added but the port for the drive gear was still in the head and plugged. The drive port was removed in 05 or later.
Also the cams changed at some point prior to 04. GSJack had posted about this before. The 05 or later EX cam may not have the worm drive gear for the tach.

It is not a problem swapping cams.

I know 97+ engines are silver and maybe a few years earlier.

Did you say you had 5 or 6 heads that you tried swapping them on? Do you still have any of those?
