Title: New to GS Twin with questions...
Post by: FlyinRyan on June 12, 2008, 06:05:59 PM
hows it goin. i'm ryan and live in maine and just got my first bike. actually i got two of them basically handed to me. one is a 1980 gs250 and the other a 91 gs 500 which is torn down to the frame right now. i'll be selling the 250 and i need a few parts to finish everything. The main thing i need is the gauge surround or the whole gauge assembly. will an 04 gauge cluster fit on the 91? will any other years fit? how bout the rear shock? can i put any other year shock on it?

hope someone responds quick cuz i think i found the guages!

thanks

Jay (a member here) used newer gauges on his, so I'm pretty sure you can. You may want to wait for him to verify. You can use any year shock, you can also use a shock from a katana 600.

this should answer most of your questions in the future.. its call the wikki ...http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Main/HomePage
most of the upgrades are here along with easy to find tips and other info...yes jay did use an aftermarket digital guage.. im not sure if hes on or will be (hes going through a tough time in his life right now)  but i believe he took it off and put it on another bike.
welcome and have fun... but watch out for yamaha.....(hes crazy) :cookoo:

The later gauge cluster uses an electronic tach, which the 91 harness isn't setup for.  Shouldn't be hard to bodge?  I dunno if the rest of the wiring is a plug and go match or not?

Here's a thread showing some pics of his newer gauges, I'm not sure of which years the bike/gauges are.

The gauges will transfer to any year gauge holder/bracket.02+ I believe has electric tach.04 does have an electric tach. They can be wired in but I dunno how.Any year rear shock will work.If you're over 150 pounds try these links for shock options.

is the 04 shock better than the 91? or is a katana shock the way to go?

You can put a 150... but really you get the best profile with a tire sized for the rim width, either a 130 or some 140s.

You'll need to check with the manufacturer for that info. There are a few 150's that will work.
