So I bought me some nice brand new progressive front springs. Started the teardown, removed the top cap..... WTF?!?!??!?! A NUT as the top spacer? HUH?

So then I pull the spring.... huh? Looks IDENTICAL to my Progressive spring. These do look the same right? Arent the stock springs much thinner? Looks like the previous owner had Progressives in there already and I didnt even know

Oh ya thats right - the stock ones are much much shorter with a big spacer.
Well poop.
NIB Progressive springs up for sale in the FS section for $52 shipped.
Man thats a tough break! I can only imagine your surprise :o
so apparently you found the progressives to be soft? Is that the only GS you've ridden? meaning no good point of reference with the assumption you had stockers in there? I'm a little nervous of finding the same to be true of my bike and I've never ridden any other gs. the PO did some mods (exhaust and rejet, and a badly wired light kit I stripped off the bike. also, he ef'd up the rejet....). It's possible he did springs but I didn't know to ask when I bought it and I have no way to know till I crack em open. They definitely feel soft in corners and nose dive under braking... I'm pretty sure I have stock in there but did you feel the same way (soft springs) before you opened them up? sorry for all the Q's just that this peaked my curiosity. I was torn between sonic and progressive and went with the later because when/if I resell the bike I figured progressive is less rider specific where as if I bought .9 or .95 sonics I could really only sell it to someone similar in size and riding style to myself... and everything I read about progressive said that it was a quality upgrade, now I'm wondering.
d
Only full size street bike Ive ridden yup. I just tend to modify everything I own as much as possible so Ive been on a parts kick seeing as how this is the first week Ive had it so Ive been ordering up all the common aftermarket parts. The shocks make a loud thud/metallic noise, sometimes just when entering driveways so I thought that was bottoming out maybe.... so I ordered the springs. Still going to swap fluid to the Good 15w I bought for it earlier today - maybe that will help a bit. Well see.
yup. I'm the same way, upgrade where you can. while you have it open, I'd get a proper spacer in there to get the right preload. that nut might have had something to do with the noise you were getting :dunno_white:
Yup proper spacer is .75" and that thing is definately not even 1/2". Maybe itll help... who knows.
I'll take the Progressives for $52 shipped.
Check FS thread - already have a buyer who PMed I think, if not Ill let you know.
Cool thanks!
And if you up to race springs, I'll buy your other progressives! :thumb:
Oooooops!
Yeah, the stock springs are puny ass little things.
I like the nut and washer. That's some high-tech preloading going on there. :icon_razz:
at least it was a pleasant surprise. a spacer is a spacer, stop being snooty man.

Um no :icon_rolleyes:
A spacer is NOT a spacer when its not the correct length and the metal on metal is making a violent clank noise at every suspension undulation.
