Title: About to order my Sport Demons..**Update! Installed, good story!!**
Post by: laserred97gt on June 14, 2008, 07:28:09 AM
Hey guys, I've never had to replace a tire on a bike, and I am about o buy some Pirelli Sport Demons for my GS.

I have read the wiki and searched lots of posts about tires, but I still have a question.

I am not worried about the visuals of the bike, I am only concerned with performance.  Should I stick with the 130 tire for the rear or step up to the 140?  I plan on installing a Kat FE down the road, and I believe I will be able to use a larger front tire then.

I will probably ride in the stock configuration for this season though.

What do you guys think?

140 shouldnt be a problem on a stock rim , alot of people prefer that

I guess what I'm asking is if the 140 tire will provide a noticeable increase in traction, lean angle, turn in effort, etc.....

Anybody upping to the 140 notice any upsides/downsides?

Thanks!

For ease of fitment I would go with 140.I currently am running Shinko Advanced 005 in 120-60 front and 160-60 rear on a 4.5 inch B6 wheel.

GSjack is our tire guru, so his advice would be best in this matter. I switched over from the OEM Exedras to the Sport Demons, about two years ago. They are supposedly shorter-lived than some replacements, but you will be amazed at how different they feel. Very sticky and confidence inspiring. Give them a go.

I'm racing on a 130 Sport Demon, and haven't had any issues with it.  I'd vote for a 130 as it's designed for the narrower rim on our machines.

jack runs a road attack 150/60/17 if I recall right now.  And a lasertec front tire.  Those were his favorites and he rides more than any of us.  I went with a 110/70/17 front and 140/70/17 rear and its ok (those are the sport demons)  I would go with a 150 for aesthetics and having a little more rubber there.  Go road attack, or check out these: http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product?storeId=10101&Pr=p_Product.CATENTRY_ID%3A2015139&productId=2015139&catalogId=10111

I've been waiting for somebody to use these and give reviews.  They're way cheap to boot and they look great.

I went ahead and bought the 140 Sport Demons.

I should have them this week and hopefully installed by the weekend.  I also have the lunchbox on the way, and I am searching for a cool slipon.

Kat shock on the way too!

For many years you could bet on a 130/70 being the best fit on our 3.5" rear rim but it's not so anymore, it has competition now.  The 140/70 which has been sized for a 4.0" rim width in the past is now sized for a 3.75 rim in both the Demons and the Roadriders making it an equally good fit on both 3.5 and 4.0 rims.  And the 140/70 Pilot Activ is sized for a 3.5" preferred rim width same as their 130/70.

I'd get the 140/70 rear now in the Activs, Demons, or Roadriders and in fact I did.  I used up the Lasertec/RoadAttack combo and am trying the Roadriders now with a 110/80 front and a 140/70 rear.  Since I weigh 240# (or so) I figure I might as well get the extra 80# load capacity of the 140/70 rear over 130/70.

I wonder if the 150 power and front are even nesscary on my bike now if you race with demons. :dunno_white:

I got my Sport Demons delivered to work last Thursday.  I decided to set aside some time today to have them installed.  I fired up my trusty elbow grease guns and removed bot of the wheels (had to make a run to buy some Allen Sockets to remove the front caliper tho)

So I took the wheels and new tires to the dealer, (cheapest around to m&b tires  :icon_confused:).  I walked to the service department, met a nice guy, and said, "I got a quote from Carl on having some tires mounted and to stop by today" he says "on the bike or off?", "off" i say.  He says "just bring them back here".  (by the way Carl had quoted me $35/tire on the phone)

I go get my wheels and tires and new valve stems, and bring them back to the service dept.  He stopped working (I think prepping) a brand new SV650, and grabbed my stuff and started working on it.  I said "I'll just go pick up some stuff from parts".  I go and inquire about some HH front pads, (they'd have to order) and ended up buying some supersport Pro-grips and glue.

I go back to service and the guy is just finishing balancing the rear.  He brings it to me and goes and I watch him balance the front.  He brings it all back to me and I ask "where do I pay"?  He says "don't worry about it." I say "no, seriously" he says "it's cool, have a good day".  So I take the wheels back out to my car, then I go right back inside and hand the guy $20 and say "here man, at least go get some cold ones on me." he said "no way, it's cool. Keep it".  I say "come on take it" he says no thanks, but have a good day!"

To show my good faith to the dealer, I went straight to their accessories department and bought a new helmet.  (the one that came with my bike is a Med, and too small for me, but I was making it work.  I was planning on buying a ES400 Scorpion from online, but instead decided to spend my money in the brick & mortar that helped me out.

I got this.... and I bought a mirrored shield to go with it   O0

I rode around the block, and they seem great.  Can't wait to get them scrubbed in!

It's nice to hear that some people still know how to do business.   :thumb:

NIIIIICE Man!

Where did you get the tires from?  Online?  Which store?

I got them from American Moto Tire.

110/140 + 2 stainless valve stems + shipping = $228.00  door to door.

The tires were wrapped with a sticker from Drag Specialties, and the valve stems cam in packages marked Parts Unlimited.

The old tires I had on the bike (Bridgestone Excedras) had a flat spot on the rear, and the front was dry rotted (cracked) so they were anything but confidence inspiring...

Sounds like a great place, I wish I had shops like that around here. My (ex) favorite shop wouldn't even mount new tires for me. I brought the rims and some tires right into their service dept and the service guy started laughing at me. He said, "I'm not going to mount those, you didn't buy them here" and started laughing. I told him I'd pay for the mounting and he said no way, if I didn't buy the tires through the shop that they wouldn't mount 'em. I waltzed right out of there and haven't been back in over a month. Shame for them, I just dropped $500 for gear I was planning on buying from them, but instead went elsewhere.

It's amazing the number of jagovs in the business, and I am glad to have found this place.

Their parts department is CRAZY to try and get ahold of on the phone though.   :dunno_white:

But, when it's time to up the bike, I'll probably go there now.
