Title: troubles with my bike =(
Post by: switch on June 14, 2008, 01:51:20 PM
ok bike troubles. my 01 GS500 overheated tonite. been riding it for about a week after work, just around the area and everything has been fine so far. today i went out for a spin after work, and after a while i noticed that when i was stopped at a light or stop sign, the rpms would drop and it wanted to turn itself off. i tried to make it home but it wasn't having it. i manage to pull into a neighborhood, and lucky for me i stopped in front of a house with a dude that owned a bike. he gave me a hand checking the oil and all that. oil level was super low apparently. we run to the auto parts store before they close and i picked up their last 2 bottles of 10w40 (valvoline motorcycle oil). we get back, back has had time to cool, i put in the 2 quarts. bike starts up, but we can hear a knocking sound. the guy says oil is still low, but i should be able to make it home (i live 5 min away). didn't make it home, pushed it to a friends, and left it there till i can go buy more oil tomorrow. goddamn, sorry for the long post/rant, im sad and frustrated. you bike goons got any ideas? the bike had an oil and filter change before i bought it (less than 100mi ago) and the bike itself has barely over 3000mi.

its great that you caught the oil in time... but are you getting fuel to the bike.  your carbs might be messed up or the petcock valve could be going bad.   Check some of these problems first  If you can run a direct line from the gas tank to your carbs.

If it was low on oil and now it's knocking. It has a bad bearing. If your bike has 3000 miles and the oil was changed 100 miles ago.The bike wasn't broken in properly. My bike doesn't use a whole quart between oil changes and I got an 89.

Sorry to hear about your bike :(

I don't think that much oil could have been consumed in 100 miles! Are you sure the oil change was done properly?

it comes on, then turns off after start ( assuming levels are correct/pressure is sufficient)
