2004 with 10,000 miles on it( first motorcyle I have owned.). Started hearing a little noise on my way home from work, sort of rattle, chatter.. Then it got louder. stopped and chain was real loose and hanging down. Went home real easy and went to tighten it. adjusted and almost went all the way out on the adjusters. looked at chain as it went around the rear sprocket and almost all of the small tubes in the links are loose and and can move around while the chain is on the sporcket. They are not even touching the sprocket. I Checked the rest of the chain and they are all the same. I don't recall the chains on the atv's I have owned being like this.
If I need a new chain, where would be the best deal because I am currently getting ready to sell the bike($2,900 obo). I am am going to get a bigger bike, not enough umph on the straight stretches and riding double... I am 210 lbs + gear. looking for 75 to 95 hp bike.
here is a pic. That is not rust on the chain, but the chain lube I use. It was a can I had for my atvs in the past.

Replace that chain with a 110 link 520 O-ring chain.Make sure the sprocket teeth count is 16 front/39 rear.If one of the sprockets has less teeth the chain is to long.
I bought the bike new so whatever the 2004 GS500f's came with is what is on it.
How long does a chain usually last mileage wise?

gsJack (a member and long-time GS owner) states that he gets 15,000 mi - 20,000 mi per chain.

He rides year round and maintains his chains regularly. For us regular folks, I would guess that 10,000 miles is OK. The thread linked above also shows a recommended replacement chain.
I lube mine once a week if I ride reguarly.

mines a 98, bought it with 3,000 miles on it, changed out the original chain @ 24,000 miles. so, that's 21,000 miles i -know- it will take. given the condition of it when i bought it, it was original. so assuming it was- a total of 24,000 miles.
what miracle lube do i use ? wd-40 for cleaning, and 10w40 motor oil for lubrication. only service the chain when it's been warmed up by a short ride. :)
2 cents
enjoy your new bike !
I get about 20,000 to 25,000 miles per chain.
I used to lube with Suzuki's gloppy, nasty chain lube. Now I'm using Dupont Teflon Multi Purpose spray that can be found at any Lowes. I think it's far superior, and much cleaner to boot.

I was using this lube but it leaves a stick mess on the chain, sprockets, chain guard, and sprocket cover.

What area of Lowe's did you find the Dupont in.I maybe able to get a half used can from my G/F's work if I can show her what it looks like.
