Title: ignition system not happy
Post by: Scott_DC on June 16, 2008, 12:43:33 PM
I've been wrenching on my '94 GS500ER a bit lately, and I think I have two problems with the ignition system. First - I checked the coils. On the primary side, they both read fine. On the secondary side, one reads 25K, the other reads 35K. That's out of spec - should I replace it or will that function fine?

The other is one of my pickups appears to be going.... often the bike is running on one cylinder. In the morning, it runs perfect, but half-way to work I lose the left cylinder at RPM's below 5000. Since my commute is completely stop-and-go traffic lights and stop signs... having no low-end really is not fun.

I dropped the bike on some ice this spring - was going around a corner at 2mph and bike just fell to the right and broke the cover that shields the pickups and while I was waiting for a new one to arrive, I think some water got in there. I'm hoping to get in there and see if I can repair any damage... I'd rather not have to buy a $125 part. Does that sound like a reasonable explanation of what's wrong with the pickup?

Thanks!

I checked the signal generator last night - one was 290 ohms, the other was 2,000 ohms. Guess that means I need a new one. Now what about my ignition coil?

It looks like you've already done some testing, but this document from John Bate's lists the whole battery of electrical tests specific to the GS500:
http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/JohnBates_ChargingCircuitTests3.pdf

That information is summarized (and customized for GS500) from:
