Title: everytime i come here, i am struck by 2 things
Post by: cd on June 17, 2008, 01:29:28 AM
how much more awesome the gs500 would be were it fuel injected....and held to slightly higher build standards - but they probably wouldnt exist in such dazzling numbers for so cheap were the second part true

and how amazing it is the people in the gs500 community really help each other out. regular bike communities you have to be part of the "cool crowd" to get any advice or words, ego and social status and posturing take priority over getting shaZam! done and riding and fixing bikes...that doesnt happen here. even if people think other people are douches, they still focus on getting peoples shaZam! running right. its truly unique.

#2 ditto man, the folks here like to focus on the bikes instead of the drama. maybe, just maybe, if i'm really careful, i can learn something every time !

I think this is partly due to the fact that the GS is somewhat of an underdog, it's the same thing with the another forum I'm on, Ranger Power Sports. The Ranger is the GS500 of the truck world.

Another great thing here;
On most other motor-related forums i've been a part of, people pretty much go insane if you even suggest using parts from other vehicles. Not to mention if you dare suggest parts from other brands!
Not here = a goldmine for diy modders  :bowdown:

Fuel injection can be done by way of Micro Squirt.I am hoping to do this over the winter.

http://microsquirt.com/

This guy had the same idea but on a bigger bike. The Micro Squirt can use the GS ignition,so no need to modify that.He used Mega Squirt which is meant for automobiles.Micro Squirt is designed for motorcycles. Before the electro gods jump on this, the GS's charging system will handle the extra power that's needed.

I bought an SV in addition to the GS.

I hang out at 'twins instead of SVrider.  'twins is a better, more tight-knit crowd.

It truly is a community and perhaps because the GS is a rider friendly and inexpensive bike, we tend to support each other better.

The occasional "I hacked this into my bike and it is all your fault I can't figure out why it won't work now" type shows up. That type is in any group.

They usually "upgrade" to something they either really cannot figure out how it works or they spent so much money on that they don't want to f$%k with it. That's fine too.

Everybody learns a little something along the way. We here just like to share it more often than others.  :kiss3:

that's the great thing about the gs500.  it's essentially unchanged since 1989 and used parts are PLENTIFUL.  and yeah, the people here are good and knowledgeable and always helpful.

That's also one of the reasons I hang out here, plus I haven't been asked to leave yet.. j/k... Nah, the GS500 is one of the bikes I was looking at for an upgrade when I had my '75 Kawi KZ400. I ended up buying a '89 Ninja 250 because of parts availability, cost, mpg, etc.. Very few GS500s around here, actually not many motorcycles at all unless its a big cruiser. The GS500 is still on my upgrade list as the miles rapidly accumulate on my little Ninja.
