I have a 2006 f with 3144 on it. I had the oil changed at 1000 miles  400 over the 600 was on a trip to deals gap before it reached 600 and went way over on the trip. I just checked the oil thanks to people posting about the gs burning oil and I found it low. So I filled it up and it took a half a quart of oil and is that bad for 2144 miles with as little of miles on it. I occasionally run it to 10000rpm but most of the time change gears around 5000rpm and somtimes I run it through the power band of 7000 to 9000 rpm. when passing cars I always get that high of a rpm. is this bad oil consumption its still under warrenty should Ihave it checked?
i didn't really understand what you were saying about 400 vs 600 miles. sorry.
as far as using oil, mine uses 1/2 a quart or so between changes, sometimes more if it's all high speed / high rpm riding. my bike has 24,000 miles, does not smoke, and leaks maybe a 1/2 a teaspoon (just enough to grab dust) between oil changes.
i'd say 1 quart between oil changes and high rpm/speed riding is normal.
edit:
you know how to check the oil, right ?
1 unscrew,
2 wipe,
3 place back in the hole (DO NOT SCREW IT IN!) wipe & check,
4 repeat #3 a couple times for an average
5 fill as needed
6 replace & screw on dipstick

The oil only need to be changed at 600 miles (1000 km) for the initial service. After that, Suzuki recommends changing the engine oil and filter every 3000 miles - 4000 miles (6000 km).

It's a good idea to check the oil level regularly.

You missed the most important point... check oil on centrestand, NOT sidestand.

The manual quote "hold the motorcycle vertically witout the centerstand". start the engine and wait a few minutes. Then check the oil level threading is not required.

1 unscrew, I tried to reply once but didn't post so i'll do it again. The 600 mile service i missed by 400 miles thus a 1000 miles when the oil change was done. I do know the right way to check the oil thanks for looking out for me.

Yes, you are correct; however, there is almost no difference in the oil level reading between checking with the bike vertical, compared to checking with the bike on the centrestand. See this thread for info:

The old Centerstand V Sidestand issue again
berto is always on top of things ! sorry, i left out the centered, level, warmed part of the equation. :)
thanks berto ! :D
Oh and oil type makes a difference. I posted on this before.

So, here is my deal- 07, changed oil at 600 miles with Mobil 1 synthetic 10w40 motorcycle oil. We have had several days of stupidly hot weather (over 100 degrees with a high of 107) and I just checked it at 1850 miles, and it was nearly 1 quart down. My riding is basically all highway riding (27 miles each way) and I rarely run the engine into the 8k+ rpm range, or accelerate hard. Does this seem a bit excessive to you guys with more knowledge of these things or is it typical given it's use and the unusually hot weather?
Breaking in can use oil. Also it uses synthetic more cos it is so slippery it can slide past seals easier.
Cool.
Buddha.
So would use use regular motorcycle oil instead of the synthetic? How long does the break in period typically last? will it use less in perhaps 10k from now do you think?
Well 600 miles may be broken in, 1000 or so is definetly ... you should ahve run regular oil through the 1500 mark to be extra sure.
Anyway, its done now, if somehting didn't break in cos the synthetic was too slippery, its not gonna change now.
Anyway, watch your oil use and keep it filled, you run out and you're gonna fry it.
Cool.
Buddha.
FWIW, I'm using Valvoline 10w-40 diesel oil, bike has 10,000km and doesn't noticeably use oil between changes.
Yet!
